In terms of socks, I'd look into merino socks - therefore, SmartWool in this case.

However, if you're on a budget, there are quite a few discount packs you can get (as merino wool can be pricey). Personally, I've tried lots of brands including Smartwool, Icebreaker. Currently my favourite is Darn Tough (Vermont made, lifetime guarantee).

The long johns don't really impress me. Last year I spurlged on merino wool. About the same price, maybe even cheaper with promo codes. Also it just seems tougher, and you could sew it I would think. Depending how active, I still like cotton. Most of us are 50 miles out in the bush.

If you don't want to spend the $ on UA, look at Starter brand or Ridell clothing. Same materials, 1/3 the price.
