Peep sight?
 

I'm looking for opinions on peep sights from people who've used em. I hunt in thick woods w/.444 marlin lever.
I also shoot a .444 marlin pistol and am considering going to a peep on that too. I'm looking for quick aquisition on running game up to 100yd.

I grew up shooting and hunting with peep sights and I still like them, we could never afford a scope. I try and use a Williams 5D (it used to cost $5). I've got them on my Marlin guide gun, Win 30/30, Thompson Center Black Diamond muzzle loader and I carry one in my pocket from Sako that fits on the scope dovetails should a scope fail in the field. For me, they're much faster than scope in heavy cover. I find myself hunting around for the target in the scope, with the peep it's always right there.

Ya, I'm giving up my Remington 30-06 pump with 1-4x scope after missing giant buck last year at 20 yds. I've picked up a dandy lever that I love and want to put the best sights on it for my style of hunting. The factory sights seem good, but am curious about a peep. I'm looking at a XS ghost ring peep.

Check out the williams sights before you go with the XS ghost ring. With the williams you can remove the aperture and have essentially a ghost ring setup if you want a quick close range sight or leave the aperture in and have a better long distance setup. You also have much finer front sights for the distance shooting. The XS sights are great for close range, under 50 yds for me but I find them a little rough at a distance as the front sight is very large. You can overcome it with practice but for those like me who find time at the range hard to come by, its a definite handicap. Hope it helps. Also, I hear the newer xs sights may be threaded and accept a williams aperture so that disadvantage may not exist anymore but their front sights still look awfully big downrange at a 100 yds and they still are awful pricey compared to the williams sights which can use your existing front blade if you wish and seem a little more reasonably priced.

My opinion is worth not much. But i've shot iron sights competitively for 15+ years. I know them well. I can still get to the target quicker with a low power scope and break a good shot. Thats may only be me though. FWIW I can shoot faster with irons just from pure speeed but the accuracy is not there. I have a tendancy to just see any part of the target and start pulling, where with a scope I can tell where I'm at for sure.

If I were going peeps I'd go the above mentioned route and use a williams type setup where I could zero in with the peep in, carry it out for close range and screw it in for long range.

peep sights are the best thing since sliced bread. you can use them for distant shots and close ones. i prefer them over open sights. scopes are the next best thing.

I am looking in to buying peep sights for an old .30-30 that I don't want to mount a scope on (kind of a family heirloom and it ejects out the top). I have not really looked too hard yet, but I am interested if anyone has any links or suggestions to where I can buy some. Thanks!!
