Am I crazy
 

I'm thinking about ditching my cotton hunting coat and overalls, and going with one of the new waterproof/windproof/breathable fabrics in an outer shell, and layer underneath as appropriate. This way I will have a camo layer I can wear in early season high temps plus late season long cold all day stand vigils. When I get cold on stand, I think it's more from my outer insulated coat not stopping the wind.

Anyone else take this approach? Would love to hear what you use and what you layer with for different temperature ranges...

What you propose is exactly what I do.

I have a set of Cabela's Rain Suede camo's that I wear as an outer layer over varying layers of other clothes. I like to wear BDU's under the outerlayer so if it gets really hot I can take off the outerlayer and still have some camo underneath. No matter what they tell you, waterproof/breathable fabric doesn't breath as much as you would like when it gets warm.

Cold Weather Example:

Base layer next to skin: Polypro wicking underwear
Second layer: BDU's or Camo cotton jeans and shirt (depends on temp)
Third layer: Black fleece sweater (can be worn under BDU shirt).
Outer layer: Waterproof hi-tech stuff

In a few minutes, I can strip off (or put on) layers to match the weather. Works great, although you have to have a pack to carry the shed clothes in if you are ground hunting.

I like Mouse's suggestion and choice of clothing. I wear much the same thing depending on the temperature and precipitation.

In warmer weather I have two Cabelas uninsulated Saddle Cloth outfits. One is Realtree XtraBrown and the other is Advantage Timber. Both are simply "outer shells" that I can layer underneath during colder weather or simply wear by themselves in warmer weather.

I also have a couple pieces of Cabelas Rain Suede and I would agree with Mouse's description of it. Good piece of clothing for a reasonable price.

But, when the weather gets really cold then I switch to my Cabelas Revolution Fleece Insulated Pullovers and Pants. There is nothing that I have found to be warmer in cold weather. They also come in an unisulated variety that you could layer under as well.

Thanks guys. The Cabelas rain suede is exactly what I'm looking at, in their new camo &quot;seclusion&quot;. Assuming one wears an extra large shirt, how much bigger do you get your outer shell in to allow for the layering you do? 1 or 2 times bigger? Thanks again, and Frank, I'm up to reading anything you want to type :)
