Field Saw - Sagen?
Any advice on a good field saw for dressing deer?
I heard that the Sagen's Hunters's Field Saw is pretty good? Any pros and cons about this saw? Any other brands/types better? Thanks in advance! |
RE: Field Saw - Sagen?
I have had one of these for 3 yrs. now. I can honestly say that this is one of the handiest and easiest to use tools I have ever used to aid in field dressin big game. It is fool proof and makes the dressing job a snap. My advice is get one!!

RE: Field Saw - Sagen?
I have been using them for years and too think they are very handy tool. One reason I bought the sagen in the first place was b/c being taught to always split the pelvis upon gutting for cooling and seperation of the inner hams. I then realized hey I dont have to cut around the popper, just release at trach and pull to the rear out plops the guts after the pelvis has been nicely cut with the sagen. Small, cheap, safe and works....no dislikes I can think of!
I received the NAP Zip Saw for my birthday but have yet to use. Other than reg. camp, bone saw, knife or small axe these are about the only ones I have seen. |

That looks like a nice saw. You should also check out a regular old Stanley folding utility saw. I've been using one for a few years and it works perfectly. I have a pretty fine toothed blade on mine (there are various blades readily available and are replaceable). It's compact, light, CHEAP and easy to use. You can get them at almost any hardware store. Worth checking out as well.

PS: I forgot to say, one of the handy features is that they use regular recipro-saw (e.g. Sawzall) blades, so if you have one of those, you probably have a perfect bone cutting saw blade in your shop already.

RE: Field Saw - Sagen?
The Sagen saw works great. I've had mine for 7 years now, used it to field dress about 20 deer (not all of them mine of course). I gave one to my dad and brother-in-law for christmas and they both love them.
