Need advice on scopes
I've been rifle hunting for about five years and always used iron sites without a problem. Thinking about getting a scope but wondering which power to buy. Never used one before. Wondering how much field of view is lost? Is 3x9x40 too much? Don't want to see just brown. My forty is pretty thick. The longest shot is usually up to 75 yrds. Hope this post makes sense

RE: Need advice on scopes
OlBud, I think you should be looking at something in the low power such as 1-4 or 2-7 power. These powers would work much better in heavy bush. You don’t need the high power that’s for sure. I would suggest to look at them in the store and see what you would be comfortable with. Good Luck.

RE: Need advice on scopes
I would just get a fix powered scope, no more than a 4X. Cheaper, lighter, and BRIGHTER than a variable.

RE: Need advice on scopes
You could consider several options. There are aimpoint scopes with little to no magnification. For a variable I would go with something like 1-4. I have a Bushnell Banner 1.5-4.5, dawn to dusk model that I like for the money. For a straight power, I would go 4 or under. I like 2.5, wide angle.
75 yds isn't far, so the magnification isn't critical. It's the precision that you can aim with, and the fact you can more quickly decide whether a buck is or is not the one you want to shoot. |
RE: Need advice on scopes
For those shots I'd either take a Bushnell Banner Dusk&Dawn 1.5x4.5 or if you want a fixed power a Weaver K4 can't be beat.:)

RE: Need advice on scopes
i use a 3x9x40 on my 06 and my 30-30 and it works great im in fla so we dont have open expances its all close quarters and the occasional field or logging road and 3x9x40 will do the trick everytime just set it to low power for close quarters and up high for distances

RE: Need advice on scopes
if your longest shot is only 75 yards go with a red dot sight with forward mounted scout scope mount. Or just stick with Iron sights you dont need magnification to 75 yards unless you are blind. But if you really dead set on a scope I wouild go with nothing bigger then a fixed 4 power scope but since now days everything is variable power get either a 3-9x32mm or 3-9x40mm then later on if you do need to take a longer shot both those scopes would be decent for long range shot
