RE: GPS
I have a Garmin etrex. I really like it. It's a good GPS for what I do.

RE: GPS

|
RE: GPS
I have a garmin 12, garmin etex summit, two rhinos and a magelleon sporttrak. all work just fine for me.
|
RE: GPS
I've had a Garmin GPS ll plus for eight years now. It still works great. However, I'm going to buy Garmin's GPS 60CS in a couple of weeks. It has just about every feature (some unnecessary) that a gps can have. Including maps, electronic compass, WAAS,etc. It is light weight too.
The only downside is the price, but I want it. |
RE: GPS
I bought a Garmin a few years back. It worked for about a year, after that it never was able to "find" itself. Stays in the "searching" mode. Garmin wanted $75 to fix it. I won't buy another Garmin.

RE: GPS
I have a few different Garmin units, I've used other types in the past. Garmin is the only way to go when it comes to GPS units. Nothing compares in quality, I have 29 units but only use 6-7 on a regular basis. Most were given to me.

RE: GPS
I've got a Garmin GPS III+. I've had it for about 5 years now and have never ever had a bit of trouble with it. The best feature about it is the ability to download topo's from anywhere in the US. This really comes in handy, especially when hunting new areas for the first time.

RE: GPS
I have a Garmin eTrex Camo that works well. Had it for about a year. Paid a little over $110 for it. I also got an optional download cable and I can download all my tracks and waypoints to my topo software (DeLorme's Topo USA). to create customized maps. It took a little coaxing to set up the first time, but now it works great (the eTrex to PC downloading).

RE: GPS
I have a garmin etrex venture that works great. Its compact, waterproof and very easy to use.

RE: GPS
I have had occasion to use, or at least 'fool around" with just about every handheld model of G.P.S. that there is. I think that the Garmin e-trex series is the most user friendly of them all. The basic e-trex, the summit, ledgend etc. all have the buttons in the same place and pretty much do the same things, the difference is, some models have more 'stuff' than others. ( That 'rocker switch' on either the ledgend or summit had me baffled for a little while)
I will admit though, I tend to use my G.P.S. a little bit differently than most folks. I tend to use mine for one specific function...That is; to indicate to me where I am right now by way of grid coordinates. It's my opinion that any function beyond your 'current' location is just gravy.:D |
RE: GPS
I am heavily considering purchasing the Garmin Rino 120. I some times hunt alone and like the Rino 120 because it has the ability to send and receive information between other 120 units to relay location information. It also doubles as a two-way. Just in case something happens, I can radio for help and let help find me using the location relay system.

RE: GPS
I have an older unit garmin gps38 it dont work as well as it used to but it gets me back when im out exploring new huntin ground
|
RE: GPS
I use a Garmin GPS 12 XL and have found that it does everything I ask of it. This is the second 12 XL I have owned but I have used many others over the years that had been provided by my employer.
Anybody that has a computer interface cable for their GPS may wish to go to the web site for the GPS manufacturer and check for available software downloads, there are occaisionally freebees available that will tweak the performance a bit. |
RE: GPS
I use a Garmin Etrex Legend, I use it for hunting as well as in the car when going to an area I'm not familiar with. 8 Mb of memory and the ability to download topo data and track info really makes a decent compromise from the more feature rich units, if that's all you need it for. The thing I don't like about the Magellan's is the size, the Garmin is compact and can easily fit anywhere.

I have an older unit garmin gps38 it dont work as well as it used to but it gets me back when im out exploring new huntin ground Hmmmm...That sounds like someone else I know on here.:D |
RE: GPS
etw, There are a multitude of reasons why you G.P.S. is not able to lock on to a signal.
They range from the unit inadvertantly being in the 'demo' mode, weak batteries or just not having a clear view of the sky. For what it's worth, I've never had a malfunction with a garmin that was not the fault of the operator. Going to the 'set-up' page and bringing it back to the default settings tend to un-screw most screw-ups. |
RE: GPS
Garmin etrex Vista. I love it. Go scouting with the topo map installed and explore places I would usually get lost in!:D
|
RE: GPS
Etrex Legend. Great little unit.
|
RE: GPS
Garmin GPS 72. Like it a lot.
|
RE: GPS
I use the Garmin GPS 72. It has your basic options, not to fancy, but it gets the job done!

RE: GPS
Magellan Sportrak Map here with the travel bundle. An excellent investment in my opinion. Picks up a signal very well...is easy to use.....and pretty darn accurate in 99% of the situations I have been in. Heck, I am programming it for use when I am down in Disney next month. ;)

RE: GPS
Garmin Legend. It has been great, it is small, and user friendly.
|
RE: GPS
Garmin E-trex works good for me! I mark every stand I come accross on our lease while I'm scouting. It is a very good tool to have!
|
RE: GPS
My first unit was the Garmin 45. I bought it the first week they were out and found GPS will change the way you hunt! Best thing you can buy for the outdoors. I bought Garmin because they were the only one approved by the FAA for flight use. Not that I fly but I figured if they were the only one good enough for flight use, they were good enough for me. Since then, I've bought a Megellan, a Garmin 2610 for the truck and a Garmin RINO. Hands down, Garmin is the best!

RE: GPS
Hi
I've used a Garmin 12Xl for over 7 years. It still works, but I bought a new 76 (w/o map) at the beginning of the year. Better display, WAAS, and multiple breadcrumb trails compared to my old unit. Used the old unit to keep me from getting lost in the mountains. Fun using the with the TOPO software. DeLorme allows you to view split screen with digital contour on one side and USGS quad data or satellite images on the other. Can draw a line on the screen and download it as a breadcrumb trail to follow. So far I've been mapping Denver Metro bike trails with mine. Would love to have the Rino 130s for my son and me, but that will have to wait for a real job. General use, the Garmin GPS 76CS, but selling them doesn't bring in enough money for me to get one now. Enjoy |
RE: GPS
I have the Garmin eMap. It’s one of the models with the larger screen and has the capability of downloading additional maps. It’s great for traveling, hunting or fishing.
|
RE: GPS
I have a Magellan Meridian and love it. We use it almost every weekend geocacheing and usually hit dead on to within 10 feet of the cords.
If you haven't tried it go geocaching, we have a 6 and 4 year old and they love the hikes the hunt and the suprises. |
RE: GPS
Several of my gang are considering the Garmin Rino's I'm looking at the 130 mostly because it features a digital compass and can lock on to the satellites from a stationary position. Anyone out there have any comments on the Rino series??

RE: GPS
I use the Garmin etrex venture. I love it. it is very easy to use and waterproof. The batteries last a long time, and you can download maps to it.

RE: GPS
BTBowhunter, Several of my friends and I purchased the RINO 120's this year and have been testing them out locally. In a nutshell, they have a ton of features. The GPS seems to be up to Garmin standards and woks great, and unlike a previous posting, our radios seem to work great. If you have the software, you can download better maps into it to give you street level or TOPO maps. They have both FRS and GMRS radio channels so you have 2 or 5 mile (ideal) range. What we like the best is you can see on the GPS map where everyone (who's using a RINO) is located. Nice feature. Easy to find someone who has game down without loading in lat/long coordinates. My 2 cents worth.

Thanks highpower, for the input!

RE: GPS
Ans. to DAVE590: I triple checked the Garmin's settings.. It is not in the Demo mode. I would like to think that my call to Garmin's customer service would have walked me thru any simple button pushing resolve. That did not happen. They want $75 to look at it. I like to use a GPS, but the next GPS that I buy will not be a GARMIN, no customer service!
