Default Sighting in a Elite 4200

I just mounted and bore sighted a Bushnell Elite 4200 on my 270 wsm and need some help on the windage, elevation, and distance to sight it in.
My big question is what does one click equal @ 100 yards. From what I read you should hit about 3 inches high @ 100 yards, is this correct?? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers!!

Norco, if it's 1/4" clicks, then each one will move the point of impact 1/4" at 100 yds.
Not knowing the exact ballistics for the 270 WSM, I'd say if you are 3" high at 100 yds. it would put your zero well past 200 yds.
I don't know what you have been reading, but it may have been about a 3" maximum point blank range, which is different for each caliber and bullet weight. Meaning that sighting in at a certain point above zero at 100 yards, your shots will not be higher or lower than 3", at any range out to some distance between 300 and 350 yards, (so you would be able to aim "dead-on" and not have to hold over/under at any distance inbetween.) This maximum distance will also be different for each caliber and bullet weight.
I prefer to sight in at a known range of 100 or 200 yards, compared to using a maximum point blank range. Good luck!

1 click = 1/4" at 100 yards on the 4200. Sighting in 3" would be a point and shoot to 300-350 Yards - zero would probabbly be 250-275 I would say for the 270WSM. If you see shots of the 300 yard range and are comfortable with taking those shots, 3" high is good. If your not comfortable or won't see these longer range shots as a rule I would go 1.5" high. Some feel over compensating is better, however I am not one of them I set my zero to match my area(s) and abilities. Also consider when free handed it a lot of shooters tend to pull up when firing, actually causing you to shoot even higher...this is why I am not a big fan of over inching your zero. For me I would much rather know what my bullet will do at my comfortable ranges and just concentrate on putting the hairs where they need to be vs how high or low on the animal. I set my zero accordingly. Hit the range you have loads of time to find your spot prior to this fall.

Norco,
Plus +3 will give you a zero of 280 to 310 yards, somewhere in there depending on your bullet and velocity.
Suggest sighting in at 250 yard 0.
This is appx. :
+2.3 at 100 yards
+1.9 at 200 yards
-3.2 at 300 yards
-14. at 300 yards
This is using 140gr bullet at 3100fps.
It is best just to 0 the gun at 250 yards (if you have a long enough range) then you know you are where you want to be.
Get it to appx. +2.3 at 100 then move out to 250 to really dial it in.

This means you can hold right on out to just past 300 yards with no worries of being too high at shorter ranges.
350 hold top of the back and 400 hold about 5" over the back.
A mule deer is appx. 18" from top of back to bottom of chest, smaller whitetails will be less, appx. 16".
Go to www.biggameinfo.com there is an easy to use ballistics calculator there that will give you all this type of info.
Just plug in your bullet info, velocity, and the zero range then the program will calculate your trajectory for you.

So what distance should I shoot at to sight in my rifle? Do I sight in the gun at the yardage where I will be at zero or go closer? Farther? Here's the ballistics for the 270 wsm in a 150 Ballistic Silvertip:
velocity 0-3120 100yds-2923 200yds-2734 300yds-2554 400yds-2380
energy 0-3242 100yds-2845 200yds-2490 300yds-2172 400yds-1886
arc,inches: 100yds-+1.3 200yds-0 300yds -5.9 400yds -17.2
Also one other question is does a click @ 100 yards move the point of impact 1/4 inch on paper? So would four clicks equal moving my point of impact by an inch? Great info guys your're really helping me out!!
Cheers!!

Yes it will be 1/4" @100 yards for each click. As I said, I prefer to know my zero. If most of my hunting will be 200 yards max, then I'd go with a 100 yd. zero, if you will be doing longer range shooting , a 200 yd. zero will be good.

Norco, as jagman said you have the adjustments down (each click is = 1/4" or 4 click = 1" at 100). I always start my sight in process at 100. Couple reason are:
a) 100 yards ranges are common
b) scope adjustments are easier at 100
c) ballistic calcs are common for 100 yards set ups

Now I never stop at 100, IMO it is essential to shoot/practice at the distances you intend to hunt with in the field. The ball. calcs are just a starting point, you should never trust if it says 1" at 100 will give you a 200 zero...the only way is to shoot that distance and make sure with your load and rifle!
