30-06 good bad?
I am going to buy a new rifle this year and was just wandering what you guys think. I will mostly be deer hunting in easterm Missouri there is a lot of woods but do have shots at 300yds. I also am planning hunts in canada. Is this a good choice or should I go to a 270. I dont want to rule out bigger game hunting like Elk. I have been looking at the Ruger rifles. I know this topic has probally been talked about and the 30-06 is considered a good all around caliber but I also want accuracy. Any suggestions would be helpful Thanks.
p.s. I am a big boy recoil is not a factor |
RE: 30-06 good bad?
A 30-06 is the perfect choice for what you plan on using it for. expecially if you plan on Canada with the bigger bodied deer you can use a heavier bullet 180gr or more. than the 270. Although the 270 would be a good choice also.

RE: 30-06 good bad?
The 30-06 is a great choice. Plus if you just want to do some plinking, military surpluss ammo is cheap as dirt.

RE: 30-06 good bad?
I recommend the .30-06 as well. It's a perfect cartridge for North American big game. Between the great ballistics and the large selection of ammo, it'll take care of whatever you need.

RE: 30-06 good bad?
i use a 30-06, 180gr. silvertips for deer in vt. just once have i shot twice at a deer after hitting it, and that's because it was headed for the swamp that i didn't want to go into. they haven't gone far, if at all. works well for fallow deer, too. but, my father went for a .280, after using an .06 for years, and is just as happy with his results.

RE: 30-06 good bad?
Hi mossymike,
It'd be hard to do better than the .30-06. And they are plenty accurate as well, (actually has more to do with the individual rifle than the caliber). It sounds like it would fill your needs perfectly. Good luck with the new purchase! |
RE: 30-06 good bad?
I love the .30-06! this is the only gun i have ever hunted with. i only shoot 150 grain because i'm small, but have only had to shoot a deer twice once. that was my first deer and i pulled up and spine shot it. not pretty. after a shot to the neck it went quickly. this year i got two does in 10 min. 1 dropped and the other went 15 yards. a great all around choice for a gun. also be sure to get a quality scope. that is a key factor in accuracy. my dad has a scope on his gun and it isn't mounted properly and it isn't as accurate as mine. good luck im sure you'll have fun if you get a .30-06:)

RE: 30-06 good bad?
Chalk another one up for the 30-06. I have one in a Ruger M77 MKII stainless steel and synthetic stock. I think you will love the Ruger!

RE: 30-06 good bad?
.30-06 is great. My dad and I have taken many many deer with pump .30-06s with leupolds, more than have gotten away.

RE: 30-06 good bad?
Theres a reason why the .30-06 has been around for 98 years...it works.
|
RE: 30-06 good bad?
If you do your part the 30.06 will do all you ask of it and then some.
|
RE: 30-06 good bad?
Im puttin another one in for the .30-06 cuse you can use it for whitetails to moose.

RE: 30-06 good bad?
30-06 IS THE WAY TO GO HANDS DOWN[8D]

RE: 30-06 good bad?
Yep, another vote for the ole '06!;)

RE: 30-06 good bad?
Geesh! I can't let this be unanimus, that would just be uncivilized!:D
So, I'll go against the grain. The '06 is a great caliber, arguably, the best all around caliber there is! However, J.R. Sundra (sp.?) wrote a very good argument against the "06. He states the same feelings that I have about the '06. It is truely the jack of all trades, but master of none! If you want to really match the caliber to the game, and want many guns, then there are better calibers for each job than the '06. (For deer sized game I'd rather the .260 or 7mm-08) But if you want only one gun, or you just prefer the '06, by all means, GO FOR IT! You can't go wrong either way! Good luck! |
RE: 30-06 good bad?
The 06 as well as many other will do the trick.
Funny I live and hunt our big bodied deer here in canada yet never seen the need for 180gr 30 cal bullet. If I did it would be thrown from one of the 300's not an 06. I know a lot of guys who use an 06 and the choice is 150-165gr bullets for deer. I use a 7mmremmag for an all arounder and am very pleased with the results. 140-150 gr BT bullet for deer & 140-160 solid constructed bullet for elk or moose works just dandy in .284 offering for my needs, I wouldn't trade it for an 06';)! Don't throw the 270 out of bed either it is a fine caliber for mostly deer hunting and will do with the proper bullet and limitations on an elk hunt as well. I have used a 270 winnie to haul down lopers, deer, black bears, elk and moose. While I wouldn't pick it as my yearly choice for the bigger stuff it will work on the odd hunt if it comes your way but as deer prodominant rifle it is right on the money. |
RE: 30-06 good bad?
i got a ruger1 this year and love it. it is only 36 inches long so not sure on real long shots

RE: 30-06 good bad?
Aught Six. How come you always recommend the Aught Six?:D
|
RE: 30-06 good bad?
The 06 is a great choice and you have a great rifle in mind. Get a Ruger in o6 and top it with a quality scope and you'll be set.I prefer the 270 Win for Whitetails, but the 06 can be used on any North American Beast,

RE: 30-06 good bad?
Is water wet? A no brainer! Like many have suggested....... the 06, it's been there and that that several thousand times:)

RE: 30-06 good bad?
The '06 is GOOOOOOD! I love mine. Savage 111 composite stock. Very accurate. Ammo available almost everywhere. You could pretty much kill anything in North America with it. As many have said if your looking for just one rifle, this is it. As far as not being perfect for anything, I have to disagree.
Rifle, Ammo, Shooter. Those three must be matched to each other. David |
RE: 30-06 good bad?
30-06 is good!
|
RE: 30-06 good bad?
Hard to disagree with the others. The 06 is one tough cartridge to beat, great selection for bullet weights and every manufacturer offers this chambering in just about every model, sans lever guns that is. You mentioned the 270 and going to Canada, I would also consider the 300 Winmag or the 7mm mag, both of which have factory loads readily available wherever you go.

RE: 30-06 good bad?
mossymike,
My vote is for the 06, even though I own several different rifles and calibers, I reach for the Ruger 06 most of the time. My two cents. dog1 |
