30-06 good bad?

RE: 30-06 good bad?
Geesh! I can't let this be unanimus, that would just be uncivilized!
So, I'll go against the grain.
The '06 is a great caliber, arguably, the best all around caliber there is!
However, J.R. Sundra (sp.?) wrote a very good argument against the "06.
He states the same feelings that I have about the '06.
It is truely the jack of all trades, but master of none!
If you want to really match the caliber to the game, and want many guns, then there are better calibers for each job than the '06. (For deer sized game I'd rather the .260 or 7mm-08)
But if you want only one gun, or you just prefer the '06, by all means, GO FOR IT! You can't go wrong either way! Good luck!

The 06 as well as many other will do the trick.
Funny I live and hunt our big bodied deer here in canada yet never seen the need for 180gr 30 cal bullet. If I did it would be thrown from one of the 300's not an 06. I know a lot of guys who use an 06 and the choice is 150-165gr bullets for deer.
I use a 7mmremmag for an all arounder and am very pleased with the results. 140-150 gr BT bullet for deer & 140-160 solid constructed bullet for elk or moose works just dandy in .284 offering for my needs, I wouldn't trade it for an 06'!
Don't throw the 270 out of bed either it is a fine caliber for mostly deer hunting and will do with the proper bullet and limitations on an elk hunt as well. I have used a 270 winnie to haul down lopers, deer, black bears, elk and moose. While I wouldn't pick it as my yearly choice for the bigger stuff it will work on the odd hunt if it comes your way but as deer prodominant rifle it is right on the money.

The 06 is a great choice and you have a great rifle in mind. Get a Ruger in o6 and top it with a quality scope and you'll be set.I prefer the 270 Win for Whitetails, but the 06 can be used on any North American Beast,
