Hi jdeerhunter270,

Well, I guess to a large degree it would depend on your intended use(s). But if you are talking the majority of medium and big game in the United States.....you'd be hard pressed to do better than your handle. A .270 Winchester in a rifle that you like, handles well for you, and fits you....would be hard to top.

For additional information about many calibers...and how they "stack up"...check out this site:

http://www.chuckhawks.com/index2e.rifle_cartridges.htm

There is so much useful information located there it should provide you with all you need to make an informed decision.

Good luck with your endeavor!

Dave

RE: caliber

I actually prefer the 7mm-08 over the 270win.It delivers less recoil and muzzle blast which will help a new hunter to improve his shooting. It also offers a better selection of bullets than the 270 if you intend to hunt game larger than deer.

RE: caliber

260, 270, 7mm-08, 25-06, 270,or 30-06 any of these will do well for most North American Big game. The 270 would be hard to beat. One reason there is not as big a selection of bullets for the 270 is the fact that it kills all game equally well with just the good old 130 grain bullet. From coyotes to elk.
