Permethrin & Goretex

Anyone know if permethrin will adversely affect breathable material like goretex, underarmour, merino wool, and similar materials? I'd like to apply it to my boots, but I don't want to seal them up so they are not breathable. One manufacturer's website I was on said that it would not harm clothing or equipment, but to test some in an inconspicuous spot. I don't know how you would be able to tell if it was affecting breathability until it was too late.

I've used Permathrine on Gore-Tex lined hiking and hunting with no issues that I can tell. It bonds to the fibers so I wouldn't think it would affect the breathability, or at least it hasn't for me.

I've used Permanone (main ingredient was Permethrin) since back in the 80s and continue to today (simplest form is flea/tick killer in spray bottles at pet stores). NEVER had a problem with it on ANY clothing, goretex or otherwise! (Just don't spray it directly on your skin)

Thanks for the replys. The breathable/moisture wicking stuff -- gortex or merino -- tends to be on the pricey side, so just being cautious.

No and I am a retired chemist by trade. But do not apply to skin.

You typically spray the permethrin on the outside layer of clothing. The goretex layer is usually sandwiched under that layer. The permethrin never touches the goretex. I've never found permethrin to have an affect on any clothing material.

Thanks for all the good info, everyone.

I am guessing you are worried about ticks.

Some non chemical tips.

Wear longer tube socks and tuck your pants legs into the sock.
Wear long sleeved T shirts and keep every thing tucked in.
Light colored clothing helps spot ticks quicker.
Ticks don't cling well to those smooth green rubber boots.
If you have been in the woods for a day - remove all clothing, empty pockets and put in a cloths dryer at a hot setting for 10 minutes or more.
Never lay your outdoor clothes on your bedding. Keep them as far away from where you sleep as you can.
