First the Cabela's bib is just horrible and it isn't waterproof or windproof at all. I thought the IGI Gear jacket water/wind proof but my friend who has the same jacket let me in on the fact that they don't stay dry for long in the rain (say after an hour). So naturally 3 months after I bought my first set of camo I'm in the market for more.

I was debating a couple of things one of the following:
1) Frogg Togg Suit (already purchased for $50)
2) ScentBlocker RainBlocker Jacket/Pants (already purchased for $100 for both)
3) Cabela's Silent Suede 4 in 1 Jacket (to be purchased for $130)
4) Cabela's MT050 7 in 1 Parka (to be purchased for $260)

I purchased the first two items already because I got them on sale and I can return them any time. I was thinking of just keeping one of them and then buying nicer stuff at the end of the season when the sales go on. However the jacket and bib I have now aren't very heavy for the late season but I think I can just layer instead of getting something that's too heavy. With layering I've learned that whatever it is needs to be a zip up so it can go over what I'm wearing while my harness is attached to a tree. The two jackets seem like a nice alternative since you can add layers as needed but they leave me without waterproof/windproof pants.

I was wondering why people had so much camo when I started by I'm quickly learning that it's hard to find something that is designed well without spending a fortune on Sitka/Kuiu or some other expensive brand. Because I'm new to hunting I have a ton of things to buy and I don't want to go crazy on camo and run my funds out for buying a new shotgun.

Any advice would be helpful.

Thanks
Sam

Without a doubt, selecting quality hunting clothing can become a daunting task. I think you're on the right track trying Cabelas as most everything I've ever gotten from them has been of excellent quality. I purchased a heavy WP parka from them last year and have worn it a lot ever since. Seems to breath well and is warm, though as I think now, I've never sat in pouring rain with it on. I should now mention that I ONLY purchase Cabelas gear when on sale in their bargain cave, typically saving 1/2 or more of regular retail price.

Once you find a good parka, I'd look for a similar (not necessarily same line) pair of bibs to wear as a warm and/or waterproof outer layer. I use both these pieces on most cold or wet days, layering underneath as temperature dictates. Both these pieces also get carried in/on my backpack to my stand location and then added, preventing overheating when walking in.

This is the parka I ended up with and I am very satisfied with it after two seasons of use. Lots of handy pockets and sizing has allowed layering underneath when needed.

I'm eyeing these bibs:

Bought this as a rain parka:

Interesting... I've seen mixed reviews on them. I might keep the set I just picked up. I was about to return them until I saw this.

Problem with layering for me is that I find once I'm strapped to the tree with a harnesses, adding/removing layers becomes more challenging. If you know a good system to do it please do let me know.

I have a scent-blocker / goretex rain jacket. When you think about it, this makes no sense. You have to run the scent-blocker material at high heat to "recharge" it, but you'll ruing the goretex, because the high heat will destroy its breathability (I assume pores in the goretex material get sealed by the heat). (I must have hit the same sale at Dick's, I bought them, but don't think I would again.)

Put your harness on under some of your outer layers. I never have had a problem slipping a jacket on over my harness.

I have the ScentBlocker Waterproof Insulated Bibs and jacket..
They are dry and warm...I was so impressed I brought a second pair of bibs. They were on sale for $69.99 I looked this morning there regular price. The sale was the week of Thanksgiving...

I can't say for sure about the scent-blocker technology. They are quality hunting gear.

If you can look before you buy, take a small blacklight along and shine it on them. You can get one the size of a small LED flashlight for about $8 on Amazon, and I'm sure you can find them other places, too. Whatever camo lights up like a Christmas tree, you don't want. Deer can see UV light. Also, don't wash in a detergent that has brightening agents, because that just adds a UV sheen to the clothing.
