Apps?

I don't think this is in the right forum so excuse me if i:poke:t's wrong.

Anyways I just want to know if anyone else has ever used a phone application to boost hunting success. Personally I've used google maps for both safety reasons and for marking stand locations. Also, me and my father text each other before going up and down a tree stand. For example:
Me: "going up"
"up"
"going down"
"down"

Now if I didn't confirm I was in the desired location he would have known something was wrong. Luckily neither of us have had a problem with this.

Also as far as calls go I use "iHunt Calls and Sounds". This is much better than any e-caller I've owned in the past. There's 32 animals I believe and 500 or so sounds. There's everything from deer and turkey to zebra and pheasant with no white Lise or static. I personally use it mostly for coyotes.

So let's see how you phone helps you hunt!

Opinion ( MINE) Apps are not applicable while hunting.

I still use a compass , no cell phone , no gps .

If you do use tech well wishes.

mossy oak scoutlook. excellent for topo maps, solunar tables, weather. ect.

Triordanchary 03-02-2013 09:03 PM

I don't think there are apps but I think it's not a good idea to use phones during hunting. :)

Too much dependency on technology

What happens when the batteries go dead.

Good thing I got in all those solo hunts, alone, no cell phone, no gps, no contact, no backup, climbing trees alone, no one to send messages, no one to email, dragging a deer out alone.

Guess modern technology means you get a day in the woods if.....
if you have someone whose waiting for an immediate message, so they can rescue you .

One of the many reasons I hunt is to get away from the electronic leash. Is there a "leave me the hxll alone" app?

Deepsouthdeerjunky 03-22-2013 08:49 PM

Even though using a cell phone app clearly makes you less of hunter than those who do not i do still have some that help me in my short comings... (that was sarcasm).
1)the whitetail freak app is great for areal photos, and marking stand locations/ property boundries/cameras/ anything. But like was stated above, google earth works just as well.
2) also, a cheap little flashlight app has been helpful in some instances... it sure is nice to have something handy while packing up after dark if you didnt bring a flashlight or the batteries have recently died.

Yes and it's free, leave it at home. or take it and don't use it unless EMRErgency.

Seems a Lot of the younger people...

are spending more time with the cell phones and electronics than they are with old time hunting. If a satellite ever failed, I wonder how many "hunters" would be in the woods.

Deepsouthdeerjunky 03-24-2013 11:39 AM

This guy asked a simple question. Helpful hunting related apps or those that may be useful while hunting. Remarks about how carrying a cell phone into the woods with you makes you less of a hunter are not necessary. Im sure theres another thread for that somewhere else.

Topgun 3006 03-24-2013 04:06 PM

I'm not into all the high tech stuff for the hunting part of it, but IMHO using a phone or radio for contacts between guys for safety going up and down out of stands like the OP mentioned is a smart ******* thing to do.

I plead the Fifth.

I bring a phone with me, in an emergency it may be helpful if by some miracle I can get a signal. But I will never rely on it when I am out there... ever...

Hi mace1700!

First, thanks for posting this question. All of the negative comments about "not being a real hunter if you use tech" are not true or necessary. This day and age, the question you asked is fair one. Also, I'd still be in the woods whether cell phones existed or not. They weren't around when I was growing up and I still spent a lot of time hunting and fishing, but now I find them very helpful. They do have a valid place in the woods and some app's can enrich the hunting experience.

There is certainly nothing wrong with you and your father having a system that leverages technology to help ensure you're both safe getting into and out of a tree stand. That's smart. I often hunt alone and I take my phone with me in case I were to suffer an injury (slip and fall while climbing out of a stand on a rainy/icy/snowy day) or if I'm out later than usual I can call my wife and let her know that I'm OK so that she doesn't worry. That's just smart hunting.

I like to use google maps to review the property and identify good tree stand locations or shooting lanes. I mark them on "My Maps" in Google. I can pull up those maps on my phone, if necessary. I use iSolunar to monitor solunar schedules. I previously used the Cabelas app, but it recently changed and isn't good for anything but browsing their website. It lost the mapping and ballistics features it once had. I'm searching for a new ballistics app. I've used the Primos Hunting Calls app a couple times, but not that often. I mostly use it to listen to turkey sounds while I practice my calling skills. I torture my poor wife and ask her to tell me how close my mouth call sounds to the recorded sound on the app. Lastly, I might use Flick Golf while sitting in a tree stand on a slow day!

I'll have to check out the iHunt Calls and Sounds or Whitetail Freak app that you and Deepsouthdeerjunky recommended. They both sound helpful. Thanks to both of you for mentioning them.

No signal in my woods. But why not use it if it works for you!

creekbed1990 07-10-2013 12:10 PM

i use whitetail freaks Property manager to mark my stands, cameras, mineral licks, food plots, etc. This App is wonderful, plus it gives me something to ponder while i am unable to be in the woods!

chopper29 07-10-2013 01:48 PM

There's an app called deer scouter. It's awesome! U can mark out rubs and scrapes and treestands cameras everything. Very helpful for finding travel routes. Don't worry about all these so called hard core hunters that swear by hunting the hard way. Most are not that big of outdoorsman as they claim I'm sure. Good luck

athannrollo 08-04-2013 02:01 AM

I'd rather save my cellphone's battery for emergency than for apps. :)

What he said.
Same goes for me.

starvingoutdoorsman 01-28-2014 01:50 PM

I have used certain apps. Mainly parcel apps (for landowner names. Works similar to the onXmaps chips. onXmaps even has the app now for android and iPhone. Most of my apps are for maps. Nothing to do with calls or anything and mainly used in preseason. Otherwise my cumulative effort in the preseason winds up as waypoints on my GPS. Here is a link to a post I wrote last year about how I use apps and google earth (also an app on the phones but im not a fan of the phone version) to scout what I can at home before leaving to see it in person.

http://starvingoutdoorsman.wordpress...-google-earth/

That being said, I still take and use good ol maps and compass if I plan to go very far.

RockyMtnGobblers 03-18-2014 07:45 AM

There are a lot of apps for hunting I suggest you go to google app store etc.
Not sure where you are but just in case Colorado does not allow any electronic aids for hunting such as electronic calls, but I'm sure map apps etc. are just fine, if hunting here I'd just check with dow regs. Good luck I hope you find what you need.

buck308 03-19-2014 05:58 AM

I don't use apps. hunting is to relax get away from all that stuff

couldn't agree with you more;)

theshark 04-03-2014 09:53 AM

Does huntingnet.com have an app? should would make posting by phone easier.

buck308 04-04-2014 02:36 PM

Nah. they don't but i do agree with that that would be handy if you were in a waiting room or somthing but if i am really bored i just turn 3g on and go on the internet while i am in the car etc

BigCountry1010 09-10-2015 10:36 PM

Here's an app that was designed to help you hunt smarter - The Quiver Hunting App. It helps you track your hunts so that you can better understand the patterns between deer movement and weather in your area. It's free so check it out! https://itunes.apple.com/app/id982722720

Daniel72 11-22-2015 04:23 PM

The only app I use while I'm out is onX hunt. And I only use it when I'm out scouting to mark property lines rubs scrapes and where I hang my stands I even have the app on my girlfriends phone so if anything happens to me she'll know right where I am. I also find it handy for when your bow hunting and shoot a deer and need to give it time before you start tracking you can mark where you shot it at where you found the arrow and all the blood you find while tracking it so if you have to stop and return in the morning I find it handy and besides that I don't really use my phone while I'm out

karli 05-25-2018 08:42 PM

Internet is a great tool for hunt planning. I have a few websites I use but I don't' use any apps.
