Hunting Clothing
 

Hi guys!

I reached out to this community when I was purchasing my first shotgun. All I got was awesome, friendly advice. Now that the gun is purchased, I need your kind advice on waterfowl and upland bird clothing.

Here is what I have been looking at thus far:

Should I get my waterfowl clothing in Max 4 or Duck Blind? FYI, I'll be doing my hunting in upstate New York.

Anyways, what do you guys think?

I like the first jacket and the waders,

Duck blind is better in more open areas and max 4 is better in the woods.

You'll be fine mixing and matching patterns. I've been dong that for 25 years now. It hasn't been a detriment to me that I have noticed.

More importantly, buy what you can afford, that will do the job you need it to do. The expensive stuff won't make you a better hunter, only a better dressed one.

The most important thing is to stay warm. I'm not totally convinced all these new-fangled camouflage patterns are any better than the old green and brown blobs, so just get something that will break up your pattern and keep you warm.

Buy several layers of clothing -- don't rely on a heavy parka or overalls to keep you warm. When hunting in sub-zero weather in Colorado I'm dressed thusly:

Base layer, top and bottom (very thin like spandex)
fleece pants and shirt
camouflage long sleeved T-shirt
camouflage denim jeans
camouflage sweatpants over the jeans
camouflage sweatshirt w/o hood
camouflage overalls
camouflage parka
camouflage balaclava (hat that covers face, etc.)
blaze orange insulated hat
blaze orange insulated vest
thin camouflage gloves
camouflage mittens over the gloves
wool socks
camouflage winter snow boots

Of course, when hunting ducks you should skip the orange! The point is, even with all those clothes on I will get cold sometimes. Colorado is very cold at higher elevations, and I understand upstate NY is too! LAYERS ARE THE KEY TO STAYING WARM! If I get too warm, I just strip off a layer. But having the layers in the first place is more effective than just having one big bulky outer layer.
