What's in your hunting pack??

Okay, now I've been hunting for a few years (since I was 12) and my Dad helped me set up my first pack. After reaching adulthood I was able to customize the pack the way I wanted it a little more by adding some other stuff that I would need since I wouldn't always be hunting with my dad. I have two packs that I use. One is a fanny pack I take for short trips where I'm not going to be out for more than a few hours and the other one is a back pack that I take with me for the long trips. My question is this: What do you carry in your packs? Feel free to add a list of full contents as I'm always looking for options.

Also, what do you use for fire starter? I've recently been researching homemade fire starters and am looking for something that is about 99.9% waterproof and haven't found much yet. Let me know!!

aharper33 11-09-2010 01:24 PM

one thing that i have found to start fires with that works really good is Ignito Packs. they can be found at walmart and other places. They are water proof to. they are little plastic packs of some chemical that will burn at like 1000 degrees for around 10-15 minutes. these work great because all you need is a lighter to get it started and you dont have to spend anytime trying to get your fire started. also you can start with bigger pieces of wood so you can get a nice fire going great.

Never heard of those, I'll have to go to the local Wally-World and see if I can find some of them. It'd be worth the money if they're actually waterproof and work all that well!!

Cheap effective firestarter

I got this tip from an old Field and stream magazine. Save a couple of months worth of lint from the clothes dryer filter. It weighs nothing and cost nothing. I like that. Lately, I have taken to tightly packing the lint into a 35 mm film canister and squirting in a few drops of lighter fluid. Foolproof. Wishing a safe and successful hunting season to all!

My pack for deer hunting:

topographical map of the hunting area
compass
water
lunch
a few layers of clothing depending on weather
waterproof gear
deer drag harness
bottle of doe p
can call (it's a doe-in-heat bleat call)
plastic field dressing gloves
pack saw (for cutting the breast bone)
extra ammo (not that I've ever needed it!)
camo net for making a makeshift ground blind
pack field chair
tripod
hunting license and hunter safety card, pen
headlight (a flashlight that straps to my forehead)

I also wear these items while carrying the pack:
binoculars
blaze orange hat and vest (different kinds depending on weather)
knife

And of course I carry my rifle!

This is my standard load, which I carry whenever I'm less than a few miles from my truck. If I'm going WAAAAY out into the Colorado mountains (like elk hunting, which I rarely do anymore) then the list gets bigger. That's when I throw in the fire starting equipment, etc.

I do. It doesn't cause any kind of obstruction on the barrel and it keeps all foreign particulates out of the muzzle while in the field. You can also use things that look like the finger of a latex glove (or a tiny condom for you people that have never seen a latex glove) and it does the same thing. The Electrical Tape is just cheaper and provides more than just ten or so with each package.

The pack contents vary pretty widely ,what time of year ,what I'm hunting ,where I'm going. A local day hunt takes a day pack with some gear for just in case,If I'm getting on a plane or boat the pack gets much bigger with enough that if I'm stuck for three weeks , I'll be just fine.

In Alaska I can see exactly what you mean. We're only allowed to hunt here for about 6-weeks or so in the fall so that's what I base my pack on. Our season leads into the early part of winter so I want to make sure I have enough to sustain me through that part of the year too. I'm always looking for ideas.

casey012293 12-15-2010 04:10 PM

I actually made some videos with the stuff that i would use in a pack. The packs are badlands but that is beside the point. The videos are on youtube under my username TheCasey012293 and i have several packs with what i take on trips, i have changed my gear a little bit over time so the videos have a little bit different gear. My sister did a video with her stuff and the Badlands Kali as well.
