The term "Woods Rifle
The term "Woods Rifle" will, more than likely, mean different things to different hunters. My definition is a compact and portable rifle, used in thick cover most commonly found in typical whitetail habitat, east of the Mississippi. Of course, it's also a rifle capable, in proper calibers, of also hunting blacktails, mule deer, elk, bear, moose and hogs in any kind of thick cover where they might be found. Perhaps the eastern U.S. has the most identifiable and common scenarios for that type of rifle in much of the whitetail's, wild hog's and black bear's home grounds, however.

I'm thinking along the lines of a Marlin in .35 remington lever gun or a Remington 760 in 300 savage would handle the perameters you set???
|
How about the old 30-30 lever action!
|
To me the term is referring to a rifle that is relatively compact .... and some folks add that it needs to be a caliber on the large side of typical medium game choices. Such as a 35 to 45 cal. cartridge. My brother's is a Marlin 336 in 35 Rem. When I am hunting in dense cover I use my Marlin Guide in 444 Marlin, open-sights. Because the clear shot range in those places that I hunt is seldom more than 75 yards, that works great because my old eyes can still handle open sighted aiming at about 100 yards or less.

I consider a woods rifle to be compact and easy to carry lever action.
|
Often called a "brush" gun, and mine is that Marlin 336 C in .35 Remington mentioned already.
Iron sights, no scope on this one; after all it's a brush gun ! |
My old Rem. 742 in 30-06 fits the bill I think. With the proper loads, you can take anything in the lower 48, I think. My old Marlin 336 30-30 would be kind of a stretch. Both have scopes mainly because as I get older, I need one. I hunt a lot in places where 100 yards is a long shot, and these are the two I use the most.

I like the 30-30 lever action rifles for this type of hunting.

For me its a Rem 760 chambered for the lovable ol 300 Savage.

There is a lot to be said for simple machines that accomplish an objective, including those machines used for: hunting, informal target shooting and consumption of handloads. I get a kick out of hunting articles that run through the process of - "I glassed the slopes with my binoculars and spotted the (insert applicable) in the middle of the herd, then switched to my rangefinder and placed the extraordinary (blank) at 300 yards. My guide went ahead to check out the herd, while I unfolded my lawn chair/shooting bench, assembled the spotting scope, checked my position with my GPS and settled in for what I knew would be a tough shot.
