I'm new to hunting and am looking at buying a GPS unit. Does anyone have any experience/recommendations?

I have the Magellan Meridian (Marine) but it's been discontinued.These days I'd go with Garmin in whatever price range you can afford.If you are going to use it on the water as well as in the field be sure it floats or is at least waterproof.

x2 - But if I was going to go GPS, I'd take a look at the Garmin Summit HC or even the Venture HC depending on what else you plan on using the GPS for.

I always carry a compass but the beauty of a GPS is it can lead you right to your stand even when it's pitch black out plus you can download topos as well.

The beauty of a compass and topomap: batteries don't go bad at the worse possible moments, electronics can't be comprimised by mother nature, forest canopy doesn't interfere, etc. Give me the right topo map and compass, and I can get to within 25 yds of any given spot within a 20,000 acre wilderness. No brag, just fact. Most importantly, IMHO it keeps certain individuals who otherwise have no clue/business being well off the beaten path, away from my hunting area.[:@]

While obviously they have their place, for some individuals, it provides a false sense of security and a recipe for disaster. So does the topo-compass route, if you don't know what your doing.

I have the Garmin Venture. It goes for about $169 and frequently goes on sale at BPS for $129. This model allows you to add topo maps which is a great addition.
