I kind of understand what everyone else is saying about staying old school and sticking with a compass. I think if that was all a GPS did was provide compass reading and show your point on a map, you could probably argue that the compass was better. There is a lot to be said for not adopting the latest fad in technology to help your hunting. If we all did that, we would all have the BOSS balistic system from 1993 screwed on to the end of our barrels. The BOSS was hailed as "the most significant advancement in rifle accuracy in a lifetime" but proved to be overpriced and didn't really help in real hunting situations. If it was any good, snipers would have used it. Now, barely anyone even remembers it. With a handheld GPS however, those things have been in active commercial use for the last 20 years and they are used more now than ever before. To me, not using a GPS is kind of like not using a scope. You can get the job done without it but the advantages are HUGE and go far beyond simple compass readings and location awareness. |
Etrex, very easy to use!
