a question for the ATV crowd

i don' t want to open a big can o worms here;), but i am looking into buying an atv and i was wondering about top speeds. its a feature not mentioned in any pamphlets from dealers, and you can' t trust what a salesman says. i don' t have to be the fastest, but i don' t wanna be last. so i' ll post it here, what do you drive, how old is it, and what is your top road speed?

' 95 Honda 300 4-trax and clocked at 39 mph. Plenty fast for me and climbs like a goat and I can lift it sideways if I bounce it. I have never had a single repair on this well used bike other than battery and tires plus a little plastic I tore up. I think lots of the new bikes are top quality but you don' t need to go 60 unless you need to have a scooter for the dunes. Good luck.

I have a 2000 Arctic Cat 500 manual. It goes between 45-50 mph. I love going fast on most everything, but not 4-wheelers. They are a touch bit nervous going down a road at top speed.
For what it' s worth, I absolutely love the Cat. It' s everything that I think a wheeler should be.

I had a 1987 Honda 4-trax and clocked it at 45 mph. That was fast enough for me. No good having speed if you have no control.ƒ

I ride a honda rubicon.Top speed is between 55 and 60mph but it is rare that I am going anywhere near that speed.I chose this machine for the beltless automatic transmission and honda reliability and top speed was not a factor at all.

Besides Like Brampton Mike said 90% of my riding is Bush riding
I don' t need to try to be a blurr...................It' s CAMO so they can' t see me at slow speeds either[:-]

2003 Honda Rubicon, 50 MPH. Wounld not try trail riding at that speed. Auto Trans with no belt slip. A ton of low end tourqe. All machines are good, but I think the Honda is bullet proof.

Uncle al-Is 50mph the fastest your rubicon will go or the fastest you have taken it?I have had mine reading over 55 mph now that it is broken in.I agree fully with you about the rubicon having a lot of torque as mine pulls like a tractor.

RE: a question for the ATV crowd

Best I' ve done is 49 MPH on a flat gravel road.
Dealer said it will improve a little when it' s broke in.
Damn Thing sure can pull.

Artic Cat 400 and it will do over 45 mph ,I usually run it about thirty if I' m going someplace though . They get to squirrely to run them any faster on gravel .

I own a 92 Polaris and have been over 60mph many times. A friend of mine owned a Su-sucky 500 late 80s I think, 2 stroke he as been clocked at 80+. Another friend owned a honda 250r 3 wheeler which was clocked at over 70+ His brother bought it off of him and did alot of work on the engine gearing etc... He uses it for ice racing and has been clocked at over 100+

There are kits for just about every machine out there that will improve performance it just depends on how much $$$$$ you' re willing to dish out.

Yamaha Big Bear. Had it near 40-45 once. But mine is off road and in timber 99 44/10% of the time. All my hunting is done at home, and it' s a farm vehicle when not huinting.

2000 Honda 450ES. 50 miles an hour with the tires full and down hill. 46-47 cruising speed. I live on dirt roads and will take the Honda very occasionally on a little spin. I went last night for work to use it on an inspection. Held the throttle down, and went approximately 11 miles there, and then back, basically full speed. Runs like a champ and slides around the corners nice.

I' ll let you know on my new 2003 Rancher ES 2x4, after it' s broke in.

Jeff...U.P. of Michigan.
