Boots - How many grams
Ok,
I am looking to buy some hunting boots, I am use to using just insulated rubbers but with the more walking I am doing these days need a good pair of boots, The question I have is how much insulation should I be aiming to get, I tend to hunt in the -10C to 10C (about 15F to 50) I see 400, 800, 1000, 1200, 2000, Thanks Jeff |
RE: Boots - How many grams
I normally wear boots with an 800 gram rating, but I do have boots upto 1200 grams

RE: Boots - How many grams
I would go 400 but make sure you have enough room for nice thick wool socks...

RE: Boots - How many grams
I would recommend 800 gram. In 40-50 degrees you can just wear 1 pair of socks. When it gets into the 30's and lower then multiple socks are in order. Just buy 1 size larger to compensate for this. I use the adhesive toe warmers with 2 pairs of socks on the cold days and it keeps me on the stand.

RE: Boots - How many grams
If you are walking, I would go light like 200 or 400. If you will sit for hours, I would look at ~1000 with extra room for liner socks and thick wool socks.

RE: Boots - How many grams
The more walking you do the lower the rating. Definitely go with more if you sit on the stand a long time. You dont wanna go with a high rating if you walk alot obviously. Your feet will sweat and wet feet = no fun....

RE: Boots - How many grams
I would also go with the 400 gram boots, but would also recommend using a thin polypropelyne liner sock under the wool sock. I've used this combo for yearsand have always had good luck with it. The poly liner socks wick the perspiration away form the skin and will keep you much warmer. As mentioned above, remember that if your boots are too tight, you don't have a chance of staying warm. Good Luck!
P.S. I used Rocky boots for years, but recently have had a lot of trouble with the soles coming apart in large chunks.... food for thought. |
RE: Boots - How many grams
MUCK MAKES A BOOT CALLED RANGER THAT IS 1000 GRAINS W/ THE SIDE ZIPER & AFTER A LONG DAY OF WALKING & HARD HUNTING YOU JUST WANT TO PULLEM OFF....

RE: Boots - How many grams
I would recommend 800 gram boots and wear a thick hunting sock with them.

RE: Boots - How many grams
I have a pair of 1000 grams and i love them. i can weara normal pair of low cut socks and my feet still stay warm. i wouldnt get less than 1000 gramsif your gunna be in real cold late season.

RE: Boots - How many grams
If you want one pair of boots, then I wouldhave to saythe 1000. I use three pair of polypropylene socks anda heavy all wool sock, whichkeeps me pretty warm on cold days.Although, I would prefer to have a pair of 400 (or even unisulated) for early season, and a 2000 for the real cold days. stand.

RE: Boots - How many grams
Well I ended up buying 1000gr Danners, took them hunting deer for a week, the weather was sitting around 0 to -5C and we had about 12 inches of snow fall and at times I was sitting for 3 to 4 hours without moving. At the end of the four hours my feet we starting to feel a little chill, nothing I could not handle, as soon as I walked for a few minutes they were warm again.
Feet were never damp and always comfy, a huge step up from the insulated rubber boots I use to wear, one of the better hunting purchases I have made. Jeff |
