Building a gun rack
Hey guys,
I have 2 guns in my closet and I keep knocking them over. I think it is time to get a gun rack. I can' t afford a gun safe or cabinet. So, I thought about building one. It needs to hold at least 3 guns. I haven' t seen any at Walmart or Ace Hardware (Homestead). Would anybody know how to build one and what are the materials needed and what would it cost. My limit is about $40. It needs to mount on the wall. Any information will be appreciated. Thanks. |
RE: Building a gun rack
Pretty easy project, with minimal tools. You' ll need a skill saw, jigsaw and drill. Materials would be any wood, glue, crews, stain and some felt.
Basically you' ll need 2-1x5 of pine, spruce or whatever you like and fits the budget. I would think 2 x 8 foot boards would suffice. You' ll need 2 pieces for the rack of about 3-4 foot long and 2 piece for attaching them together and to the wall (3 feet long would be ok, I think). Cut boards to length with the skill saw, then cut your 3 or 4 grooves(U shaped) at an angle in the side pieces with a jigsaw. Glue and screw them to your back boards( I would run a smaller bit to pilot the hole and prevent break out or cracking). Hand sand, Stain and add some felt (use a hot glue gun to secure the felt to the wood) for the grooves to protect the guns. Then attach to the wall in a stud. I would countersink the screw holes(for attaching to the wall) and add some wood plugs if in plain view to hide the screws. Just get a picture of a gun rack and duplicate it. It would easily fit into your budget. Not sure what the price of wood is, but spruce, pine & fir finished(Planed) wood is usually the cheapest. You can put a nice oil stain on and some varnish...bet you it would look great. |
RE: Building a gun rack
i built mine...it cost me 5.75 and is made of nice oak...holds 4 guns and a bow(my own little idea) it had room for 5 guns but i made the bow holder....it was simple...hardest part was cutting out the slots...i would never made it if i didnt have shop class...but i do and i have all the saws and tools to use so i did....find a kid that has shop class to make you one...give him 10 or 15 or 20 or whatever you want and tell him what you need...tell him to keep the change...its really easy if you have the saws...you can do it skeeters way but i used real saws and everything...people loved my idea so much the sotle the idea of hte bow holder and i cant count the gunracks that came out of the class this year that all replicated mine...oh well..mines the original...good luck...
