Gun safe?

I am thinking about buying a gun safe for security from theft, safety for children and fire protection. I have looked at 5-10 different manufactures and of course they all say theirs is " the best" on the market. I am only looking to spend around $1,000 for one. Looks like the firewalls are made from sheet rock and some thickness of steel. Any suggestions? What features do you like most?

RE: Gun safe?

There is a guy just out of Portland that deals in Fort Knox gun safes. He gave me a good deal on one a few years ago that someone had custom ordered and not picked up. It was just about what I was looking for so it worked out great. It was the best investment I' ve made. Might not hurt to give him a call.

RE: Gun safe?

I built one out of a used electrical vault. It measured 60" x48" x12" ,heavy gauge steel.I bolted it to my concrete basement wall and installed a gun rack for twelve rifles and shotguns,it could fit close to two dozen.Altogether it cost me less than 100 bucks and it is very secure, just a thought if your looking for something very inexpensive.
