Knife sharpening
Or lack there of,
Short of a "Tomak" (sp), what is a good sharpening system. No free hand old school stones, all they do is dull a sharp knife for Me. I have tried all sorts of stones, rods, etc but none have worked, I am ready to get serious, but want to keep it under $100.00 looking to sharpen knives, broadheads, small tools, etc. Do I have to spend $300 plus to get something to sharpen My knifes, tec? Thanks for any advice, Slack |
RE: Knife sharpening
I have recently started using a Lansky style system, the system I bought came with 3 stones and a stone guide to keep the angle right, so far I have used it one one knife and it's worked pretty good, I started going on another but due to the fact the edge was pretty messed up it's taking me a while to cut a new one.
I think it will do a nice job and the system I bought was 45CND, I have seen them posted as low as 30CND but I would have had to order online and it probably would have cost me more in the long run. Jeff |
RE: Knife sharpening
I like the ceramic sharpeners design to sharpen broadheads. Light, easy to use and produces an sharp edge quickly. I use one to sharpen my knives.

RE: Knife sharpening
I second Dobber's recommendation on the Lansky. I am about as horrible as it gets sharpening knives. The Lansky is fairly "idiot" proof and puts a heck of a razors edge on your knives.

RE: Knife sharpening
Gatco makes a similar system to the Lansky for under $50 bucks; works very well.

RE: Knife sharpening
Agreed - the Lansky type systems are very good when used according to the directions. I use a Lansky and do 'touch-up' sharpening with an old Schrade diamond steel and leather strop.

ORIGINAL: bronko22000 and leather strop. |
RE: Knife sharpening
ORIGINAL: Dobber1978 While looking into knife sharpening I come across this leather strop often, can someone explain what exactly this is, just a chunk of leather, or something a little more specific? |
RE: Knife sharpening
Lansky! Slow, tedious, but good!
