GPS?
 

Please supply me with some reccomendation on a hand held GPS. I will stictly use the unit for hunting and fishing. A color screen would be nice. However, money is the main issue.

My dad is happy with the Garmin Legend. I will probably get the same with maps. According to my dad, the simple black and white ones do all he wants in MT, have mapping for as far as he can walk in several days and have the longest battery life. Also, I saw Dick's advertising this for $170 with the mapping.

I have used both the Garmin Extrex and the Explorist 100 by Magellin. I now carry the explorist 100 because it gets better reception in the woods. I still get reception while its in my fanny pack.Take a few minutes to get to know the controls and your good to go.For getting me in and out of the woods GPS this one works very well.

You really cant go wrong with Garmin. Go to the stores and check them out, find the one you want, then go on ebay and get one used. You would be amazed how many people buy those things compulsivley then never use them and sell them half price cause its been sitting in their drawer for a couple years. Trust me, thats how I got mine, and its in flawless condition.

i use the Lowrance iFinder and am very happy with it. I am sure that the Garmin is adequate as well.

I bought and Explorist 100 a while back and dont like it, selling on eBay, probably will get a garmin etrex or use my dads emap (discontinued but a really good GPS nevertheless)

I have a Magellan I can't remember the model but it really doesn't matter. I think any name brand will work fine. I would definately buy one with mapping capability and one that at least has a base map of the USA. If you want to buy mapping software make sure it has enough memory or else you won't be able to use it very well. The first unit I bought worked great but it didn't have a base map. You could only see points you marked. The new unit I got last year has mapping software and it's pretty cool to see where you are in relation to nearby roads and other landmarks. Even if you don't buy any map software make sure the unit has a base map, it will make your life easier.

I use the Garmin 60CSx I have also bought the city nav v8 software. It will do both Auto routing in your car and off the beatin path waypoint locations.
