What Knife to buy?
Here's another question for you all. I need to replace my knives that were lost in the fire. I know I will be buying another Gerber EZ Zip Tool, I loved that thing! As far as the knife goes, I am looking for a high quality edge that will hold, and a comfortable grip. Multiple knives for different tasks are okay. (ie. one for gutting and one for skinning) These blades will be used primarily on whitetails and black bear. I am leaning towards a combo from Knives of Alaska. Does anyone have any experience with these? Or, do you have any suggestion for me?
Thanks, Fat-Arrow |
RE: What Knife to buy?
The most cofortable knife I have usedis the new omni hunter buck knife. It has a really nice grip and the blade is really sharp. I have been cutting bailing twine with mine for 2 months now and I could still shave with it. The one I have actually has a gut hook and I noticed recently it was given the best of the best by field and stream!

I had this same decision about 3 months ago. I went with the Knives of Alaska Alaskan Hunter & the combo sheath. I had a Marbles mini caper that is my favorite caping knife. That goes in the other part of the combo sheath. The Alaskan Hunter is D2 steel & seems to hold a great edge.

If money was no object I would buy one made out of damascas steel. You can dress 10 deer and not dull the edge.I don't have one.

Here is my recommendation.
http://www.rapidriverknifeworks.com/ I have one of their Drop points and it is an awesome knife. If you order from their site you can also have it laser engraved. Rapid River Knifeworks also offer free polishing and sharpening of your Rapid River Knifeworks Knife for as long as you own it! If you're in our area, stop in the shop and we'll do it while you wait. Otherwise, ship it to us . |
RE: What Knife to buy?
I like the Knives of Alaska as well. I have several. They hold an edge really well. A folder with a blade made of s30v steel will also hold one heck of an edge. Buck makes some as does Spyderco and Benchmade.

Id reccommmend a Grohmann #4 survival or a #1 original, both are fine knives and are backed by a great warrenty... wow did that ever sound like a sales pitch... seriously though they're great knives.

I use a Buck Alpha w/ a guthook. My uncle used it a few years ago on his deer and loved it. Now everyone in our camp uses one. It holds a sharp edge and is very durable. You can also use it for a bottle opener :)

I just purchased a bunch of knives from Puma.
They are incredibly sharp and hold an edge quite well. You can't beat a German knife. |
RE: What Knife to buy?
Buck Pro-Line "Zipper". Well made and well balanced.

good old buck 119 is my choice

I have an Alaskan Kodi-Pac and like it a lot. It inclused a medium knife with gut hook, caper, and saw. The caper is my favorite knife from the pack. You can't beat it for the price. You can pick one up for about $60.
As for any other knife, look for one that holds an edge. |
RE: What Knife to buy?
Hella knives are my favorite. A laminate steel knife that is hand-made without the custom knife price. http://www.darktimberdesign.com/helleknife/
A lot of the guides up here use them, and a friend who is a sheep and bear guide turned me onto them. I like them so much, I bought my dad one for Christmas last year. He loves his. |

RE: What Knife to buy?
Benchmade Nmbvaris, best knife I have owned for all jobs a knife is used for, from cutting bread or a roast at the table to gutting, quartering, and skinning.

RE: What Knife to buy?
any knife will do...as long as you know how to put an edge on it, i dont know why some peopleactlike theirafraid to sharpen their knifes.....i use a 30 year old 4 inch normark fillet knife... worksfine for skinning...and you can use any knife for gutting...usually i just use my 4inch fillet for the whole deer...its all you need..(along with some kind of bone saw) it only takes about a minute to unzip game with it. usually ill touch it with my steel a few time throu the whole process to keep it RAZOR sharp.
I thought about spending some money on a fancy knife....but what for a 100$ knife doesn't do any more tricks for you than a 20$ knife...believe me. |
RE: What Knife to buy?
i'm a budget minded hunter, so i stick with Buck Knives. field tested over decades and still going strong! for a pocket knife, i carry a Kershaw.

RE: What Knife to buy?
Buck is by far my favorite for hunting. Here is the one I carry. It has knife, saw and gut hook all in one. This knife has lasted me a long time and cleaned many deer!!!!!

RE: What Knife to buy?
If you are going to use your knife for field dressing, check out the browning Field Dressing series. A friend of mine let me borrow his one day. It was the sweetest thing I have ever used. It has two blades. The first blade is a regular blade with a gut hook, the other a saw. It made field dressing a snap. It is a little expesive at 80.00 but well worth the money IMO.

RE: What Knife to buy?
I'm a big fan of the Columbia River Knife & Tool knives. I've got several of their M16 folders for carry. For skinning, I just bought my son and I a pair of CRKT Bridger Skinners. Only used it on one deer so far, but, it worked great. Seemed like the blade was a really good shape for the work, good ergonomics, and it held its edge throughout the process.

RE: What Knife to buy?
FWIW I ordered a knife from Rapidriver a week ago after a suggestion from this thread. I have tried emailing and leaving a voice mail to try and get a delivery date. At this point I have not heard back from them, makes me wonder what their customer service would be like if I actually recieved it and had a problem.
