Hey thanks for the reply. I will be towing boat in spring and summer. Camper sometimes. Hunting around in general. I usually try to take a trip out to Wyoming for some muley and ranch magget hunting every couple years. Was going this year but started new job with no vacation time. Don't know a great deal about diesel and trying to do as much research as possible. If they offered a 1/2 ton with a diesel that would be sufficient for us. We have a Explorer and its great but a little weak for trailering anything. Got to have room also as my 2 boys are starting to hunt.

I don't think you can beat a diesel for towing due to the torque. However alot of guys tow very seldomly and are then forced to drive a beast of a truck around the rest of the year.

Can't tell you how often I thought of something like a Dodge Dakota 4dr with a small diesel.Something like a 4-cylinder. I heard the Isuzu 4-cylinderturbo diesel has a long service record in many, many applications. Plus I would think Mercedes would havesomething small also.

My brother is a Ford mechanic andthediesel specialist at his dealership. He does not have any good things to say about the new diesel engines, however, the older diesels from around 2000 or 01 are the best engines Ford ever made. (I don't know the exact years that these engines were first produced or last available but it's sometime around 2000 and give or take a few years). If you're into a used truck this is what he'd recommend, and you can save yourself $30,000

How about a 4 door f150? I have one, it'll tow 9900 pounds, easily carry 4 people, and gets 17-18 mpg on the highway without towing anything.

Yea my dad's 04 f-350 had the injector problems. It was sent back to the factory and they put a new bottom end in it. then he bought it w/ 9,000 miles and 100,000 mile warrenty, for a good deal. Well guess what happened at 113,000 miles while we were out of town in mississippi, it droped a lifter then that caused a huge domino effect and that was it. dealership in jackson wanted $13,000fix it. they said it needed a create motor. we were ****ed because we had pulled a gooseneck horse trailer down there and had no way back. they also said it would be three weeks and they wouldn't even call the warrenty guy. so my dad calls the dealership he got it from (jacky jones ford cleavend GA great people there) and they said just too get it back here and they would pay at least half even if warrenty wouldn't cover it. one of my buddy's came out there and got us and JJF sent a roll back for dad's truck.

They got warrenty to cover part they covered part and da payed like $3,000. the total cost was like $11,000 dollars for all the stuff they had to do, I'll check with pop's and make sure of what they had to put in it,(don't wanna fill ya full of $h!t.)

The moral of the story is that while a deisel will get better MPG an more power and torque, It is a lot cheaper to buy a gas motor than a diesel. also a gas burner won't scare every animal in the county while it's cruisin the huntin land. I've had deer out in front of me in a food plot, all of the sudden they perk up, then run, WTF. then like two minutes later I can hear the ol' 350 comin my way.Itsounds like a wild pack of ankle bitters* daggin every pot and pan this side of the mississippi.

This is completely irrelevent. It doesn't matter what type of vehicle you're driving through your hunting spot- it'll scare the animals away. That's why you park and walk.

My point was that a gas burner is much quieter than a diesel. so it is not irrevelent. The distance feom which a deer can hear you will most definately effect the deer. I do park and walk. the spot I was talking about was near a road but it's a good spot. so I get droped off and he went on. He was not driving through myspot. my dad has hunted this property ALL of his life he is almost 50. this is his first deisel. We have often seen deer while driving on the old logging roads used toaccess the 2,000 acres. We haven't seen a single deer from this truck. A gas burner can be quite sneaky on a road topped with pine straw. after getting used to hearing my dad pull up in that noisy thing, one day when my uncle came by to get me I was caught off gaurd.I noticed it coming about 15 seconds before it came into sight, opposed to the few minutes with the deisel. Is that irrevelent?

HMMMMM..........now that I think about it, seems like a they make a lot of huntin' stuff to be extra quiet, wouldaquiettruck hurt?

BTW: I have no problem with walking I have walked more than a mile to get to secluded spots.

Oh come on Wave - stop barking. So many farmers and farm hands drive diesel trucks because it just makes sense. I know off-road diesel isn't supposed to be used on the roads but........

Deer on and aroundour hunting property (all farmland and woods) don't seem to have this extreme adversion to diesels. The garbage man for the farm drives an old Ford 350 diesel and I think it has what I call a Harvester-dozer diesel (International Harvester). This things make some real racket. He comes by about 4:30am and wealways meet him with a cup of coffee to find out what he's seen moving around up and down the roads during gun season. We have stood right on the road watching deerand he's hit more than his share, and he drives pretty slow and easy.

Maybe the deer where you're at are just too anal.

Yea the deer are extremly anal in that area.
