Leupold GR 8x42 or 10x42?

My mind is set on getting a pair of golden ring binoculars. I have looked through these (8x42)in all light conditions, as well as others in the same class (rich hunting buddies), and IMO the golden rings have the same if not betterclarity andperformance as some that cost much more. I hunt a mixture of open prarie, as well as low-light wooded areas with dense understory. Which power would you go with (8x42 or 10x42) and why. I have never looked through the 10x before, and don't have an opportunity to-- how much will things change (Light Transmission and Field of view)if I buy them instead of the 8x?

I would agree with the previous post's 8x suggestion. Though 10x provides a bigger image the question is how useable is that image to you? Many folks have a difficult time holding 10x bins as steady as 8x or lower mag models. At that point you have to ask what good the 10x magnification does for you since the shakiness of the image takes away from obtaining extra detail because of the larger size of the object.

An 8x binocular will give you a brighter image with a larger field of view and a larger exit pupil. All of the above will enhance the viewing experience and make using the binocular much more enjoyable.

Though I know youare set on the Golden Rings I would also suggest taking a gander at the Bushnell Elites. Same price range, normally, and same quality level optically. The big difference is their size. The Bushnells have the Swarovski ELopen bridge design and only weigh about 23 oz (versus the 32 oz of the Golden Rings). If you want to be even more frugal with the price issue then I noticed that Eagle Optics has refurbished Elites for $500. I ordered a pair of the 8x43s on Friday and hope to have them in my possession some time this week.

Hope this helps.
