Not sure about the 17 HMR. I just put one on my slug gun last year though, as i get older my eyes are not what they used to be (did I just say that:() I only sight my slug gun in at 50 yrds but at 2 inches high. This has worked on deer out to 110 yards so far. Also thinking of one for my muzzleloader here we can't put a scope on one. Need to see what the rules are though..

I know they work great on crossbows and rifles used at relitivly close distances. I think it would be hard to do 1 inch groups at 100 yards because the dot is too big. I'm sure you would have no trouble hitting deer sized game with it at 100 yards.

If you want to be very accurate at 100 get a scope with crosshairs. The red dot will be too big at that distance. I have one one both my turkey gun and my muzzleloader. In WI you can't have any magnification on a muzzleloader or I'd have cross hairs for sure.

I have used a .223 with a red dot and I have shot it in excess of 200 yards. Not sure about grouping but it will work. Buy an aim point or something that gives you the ability to turn the brightness up and down. This will allow you to still see the animal when you turn the brightness down at greater distances.

I used one for years for bullseye pistol shooting and they worked great. I stuck one on a AR a few years ago and it is hard to keep a tight group because of the size of the dot. Redfield used to make one that came with different size dots and I beleive it had a 3mm dot with a larger ring around it. That might work for you.
