I wear a Duofold base layer. My next layer is fleece pants and jacket. Stay away from your typical fleece from a department store. Go to a ski shop and look for something there. I usually wear normal cargo pants and then some Walls insulated coveralls. I usually stay pretty warm. I wear a fleece hat and neck warmer that I can pull up to my nose. I also have a pair of old ski googles that I use whe its windy. Oh yeah look at my avitar.:) I bought a pair of mittens for this year that you can pull your fingers out when needed. They seem to be the way to go. I also got a pair of electric socks that do real well in the cold. They don't get real hot but enough to keep your feet from getting cold. As a backup bring some of those hand warmer pouches and throw them in your pant,shirt or jacket pockets. You can't go wrong with all that

layer 1= thermal underwear, synthetic, breathable, top & bottom,NO COTTON
layer 2= polyproprolene underwear, top & bottom,mid to heavy
layer 3= fleece sweats, top &bottom
layer 4= goretex shell pants/parka
layer 5= a camo shirt to break up pattern of goretex
socks= wool, 1-2 pair
boots= 1000 gram rubber boots 1-2 full sizes big, i'm a 12 wear a 13/14
head= light nylon baclava, fleece hat or whatever topped off with goretex boonie hat
gloves= fleece lined wool glometts
carry in cargo pockets= extra socks, 1 pair

What about silk as a base ? I've heard itwas areal good insulator for it's light weight ? Is this a fact ?
