min.(ft-lb) for deer knock down
I've been looking at the remmington ballistic charts for the deffrint bulets ,it gives the velocity and the energy of the bulets etc.http://www.remington.com/ammo/ballistics/ballistics.htm
I am wondring if any one knows what is the least ammount of energy (ft-lb)you would need to make a good deer kill?? Thanks Edited by - hoghunter51 on 10/02/2002 14:07:18 |
RE: min.(ft-lb) for deer knock down
If I remeber correctly, the recommended minimum for whitetails is 1000# of energy.

i also think it is 1000 lbs of energy

I have seen both 1000 and 1200 ft/lbs recommended. I think 1000 is plenty for smaller whitetail, but would probably want 1200 when hunting larger northern whitetails or mule deer.

Seen it attested to for as low as 950 and high as 1250. Now having said that allow me to reiterate something. "It doesn't matter what you are shooting if you cannot hit the right spot. If you hit them in the eye with a .22 rimfire they will go down."
Get a caliber that puts out that amount of ft/lbs to the extent of your accurate range. Be sure its a load you can handle recoil wise and a good load for your gun. Here in OK they made the 22 centerfire's legal last year as long as its a 55 grain or up bullet. that would be great at shorter ranges but not so hot at 400 which is a shot you might get to take out here. Hey, size may not matter but it sure IS nice! |

energy matter but then so do momentum, and then so do bullet diameter. and then so does the bullet type you are using, a bullet made for controlled expansion with velocies of a 300 weatherby would not be a good bullet for the .308win round EVER. and the 44mag considered a great choice for hangun hunters never has more than 1000ft/lbs energy (at least in most normal loadings)
propmahn you can never have too many guns |
