Shotgun Scopes

Shotgun Scopes
I'm looking at purchasing a shotgun scope. I found one I'd like to purchase which is 2.5 x 20mm. Meaning 2.5 power, does this mean everything will be 2.5 times larger through the scope than with the naked eye? I'm not that accustom to scopes, just wondering. Is this adequate for hunting whitetails with a shotgun. I'm looking at taking shots up to 100 yards, most of the shots being closer to the 50 yard mark. Thanks for any information.

all i can say is buy a good one. cheap ones will shake the crosshairs loose on about the fifth shot. I put variables on all of mine, 3 x 5 or 3 x 7, gives me a better view. also be careful how far back you mount the scope, recoil will put a sharp cut above your eye and make you dizzy for a few minutes, if it happens, you will remember it.

Booney, you're on the right track. 2.5X mangification is about right for what you want to do. However, I don't know of any mfg's. of 2.5X scopes. You pretty much have to choose from 3-9X, 2X or 4X. That's magnification power.
Then you have to consider the lense "objective". You said 2.5 X 20. A 20mm lense is kinda puny. You would probobly be much happier with a 30, 40 or even 50mm lense as the larger the lense the more light the scope can pull in during low light.

What brand of scope are you looking at ? The 2.5 x 20 mm would work. When purchasing your scope make sure you have good eye relief or you will end up with a cut as Booney mentioned because the shotgun has a heavy recoil. Personally I wouldn’t go with anything bigger then a 40 or 42 mm objective lens. What ever you do don’t go to cheap.

Thanks for the information everyone. This is the scope my father and I were looking at getting. I just don't know that much about scopes.

Many of you said not to go cheap. This scope if fairly cheap, so is it probably not going to hold up to the recoil of a 12 ga shotgun?
Maybe I'll have to look at the Bushnell Banner Duck to Dawn, thanks again everyone.

Do yourself a big favor and forget that B square set up. The front end is 20mm, way to small to gather any light in lower light conditions.
I would recommend a Simmons "Pro-Diamond" or regular crosshaired scope in 2X or 4X. At or under $100.

I use B Square rings and they're great. B Square makes great rings and mounts, and if your gun isn't tapped you should check out their website. To the best of my knowledge, B Square does not make scopes. I'm sure they farm this job out, and I would be cautious. The mount and ring set-up pictured in this add sells for $50.00 or more I think without the scope, so the scope is sure to be junk.
I just bought a Pentax Lightseeker 2-7x for $168.00 on ebay, brand new and half retail price! Ebay might be worth a look.
As far as retail, hard to beat the Nikon Prostaff shotgun scope for $130.00...fogproof, shockproof, great optics, and a LIFETIME WARRANTY! Spend the extra few bucks and you won't have to worry.
