I had a friend that had a pair of the sportsmans gaffs and man they do slip if you are not really careful.
Same here...same situation. A buddy has been using his and he has mentioned numerous times that he has to pay particular attention to them as they are wont to slip often.

I'm assuming you are still only wanting to trim trees with these.

The professional tree trimmers I learned from NEVER used gaffs. They used ropes to climb, tie off, and then roped the limbs down.

I've done quite a few now myself and I will always use my climbing tree stand all I can along with a rope attached to the back ring on my harness for a safety.

It makes a world of difference if you have a saw light enough to operate at arms length with one hand as well. With only gaffs and a hip lanyard if you hit the rope with the saw, you are done. If you are going to try to go that way, I'd at least make up a wire rope to use for climbing.
