The three recognized (and registerable)colors of Labs are Black, Chocolate and Yellow.

All the breeds had to come from somewhere, I'm open to new breeds and find the silver and charcoal labs to be very attractive

pjhunts,

What are your plans for the dog?
Housedog?
Hunting dog?
Service dog?

Or what?

Silver Labs are registered as Chocolate. There is fairly good evidence that there is some Viszla or Weimie that was bred into a Chocolate in order to get the color (of course, all the Silver breeders deny this).
As for price, they are exhorbitant --- they usually run in the $1200 to $2500 range, so the price range you quoted is barely the amount of a deposit.
There has been a huge amount of inbreeding in order to retain the color.

If you want to read a really good article regarding Silvers, go to

Thankyou for your concern, however I'm very aware of all the controversy around these dogs. I too believe that somewhere down the line a Weimeraner or two was mixed in to create the color. This does not bother me. There is no such thing as a "purebred" dog. All the recognized breeds were created form the mixing of other breeds. Just because it was doneover a hundred years ago, and not 15-20 makes me no difference.

Same questions once again.

Basically a family pet, shed hunting buddy, fishiing partner, etc. Also a playmate for our black lab.

If you want to pay the price, then I say your desires for the dogare fine.

If you were going to Hunt and/or Hunt Test the dog, then IMO, a Silver would be a bad choice. They have pretty much had the "hunt" bred out of them in favor of breeding for color.

Good Luck in your search.

I beg to differ DOCE, but you have no clue as to what you are talking about. I have just recently purchased TWO labs one silver and one charcoal and they are already pointing at 10 weeks and retrieving to hand. Best hunting labs i have ever seen. These dogs were bought strictly for hunting on my 9000 acres in northwest KS. And about your article, there are just as many articles that state the opposite. You bash the silver breed but how do you explain BLACK AND WHITE GERMAN SHORTHAIRS. Just keep your damn mouth shut and mind your own business.

RE: Looking for silver or charcoal lab

cwq,

There certainly a few that are being bred for hunting and point. And from wht i've heard, they are pretty darned good. I think that you'll have to agree though that the majority don't fit into that category.

It wasn't my article -- I merely provided a link to an article. I'd appreciate links to the articles that you mentioned. I'm not too old to learn nor am I so set in my ways that I couldn't be convinced to change my mind.

I do wonder though why we aren't seeing Silvers or Charcoals getting titles in Hunt Tests or Field Trials. Don't get your panties in a wad -- I'm just asking a question.

As for GSPs, I know nothing about them.

Then how do you expect to get one for $400 to $500 ?
If you have "read everything there is on these dogs", you should already be aware of that.:eek:

Why don't you just breed them -- or are the same sex?

Doc, your talkin about the wrong guy. pj hunts is the one looking to buy. cwgtahoe is just a guy who came into here with his panties all in a bundle for some odd reason looking to start an arguementbybashing people instead of stating his opinion and what he knows about silvers in a respectful and non-confrontational maner so i figured I might as wellreturn the favor.I don't see why he keeps rippin intoyou when your posts in response to himhavebeen very respectful and with no confrontational intent to them. Some people just don't get it I guess. O-well. Have a good day sir. WCL

I guess you would know then that they aren't an excepted color of the labrador breed then and there for are not truely considered a lab and that is where the whole not being able to register forhunt test and trials comes in. I'm sure they are great hunters as Ibeleive that all hunting dogs "have it". I'd like to have a silver one day too but I won't pay 2500 for one so I'll prolly never have one... Well as long as a person is happy with there stuff, with all the bs and opinions to the side, thats all that matters when the day is done. Have a good one. WCL

Oops -- Stupid is as stupid does.
Maybe cwgtahoe will breed his silver to his charcoal and sell pjhunts one of the pups for $400 or $500. Got to be the deal (or steal) of a lifetime.

I've actually seen them advertised around here for that price on occasion. I too have read arguements going both ways on this subject, but like i said earlier it really doesn't matter to me.

Exactly the point. Well put there pj. As long as your dogs does everything you expect it to and are happy with your ne best friend thats all that matters. My main concern with my labs is that they hunt and retreive the way I want them too. I don't care about having a perfect dog who is a big name dog in the industry. All that matters to me is that my dog loves me and loves to work for me and I can return them the favor by taking them on fun hunts and showin them a good time. Wing shooting is one of my greatest passions mainly because I love to see dogs doing what they love and watching them work and seeing how proud they are when they are done. I run coon dogs as well and if it wasn't for the excitement you see in those dogs and the singing of there voices on tree, none ofthe long sleepless nights and miles of chasingwould be worth it. Hope you find what you are looking for and have great luckwith them. WCL
