Bear dogs
 

Indead if you run bear with dogs you no that you
have to have a good cotrailing dog. I was just wondering if anyone has a good bear dog. I have an ok bear dog, she also hunts coyote.

Don't have one, but heard a lot of great things about he kerelian (sp) bear dog.

My friend has some of the best dogs in North America and they are Redbones. Breed doesn't matter as much as training, care, experience and bloodline.

All of my wifes family in NW NC are bear hunters and all have Plott Hounds. I met Mr. Plott in 1968 at Franklin, NC.

Some dogs will not even run a bear, then there are those that will run bear, and last of all, there are a few real bear dogs. As for needing a cold nosed dog, about the only thing in the woods that puts of more scent than a bear is a boar hog or a skunk. I have had plent of dogs of different breeds that ran bear, but the only "bear dogs" that I have owned were plotts. Most lines within the plott breed have lost the traits that are required to make real bear dogs. There are a handful of plott breeders that have bred bear dogs for years and could care less about coon, cats, lion, ect. they only want bear dogs and don't use coon dogs in their program. For a bear dog, get a pup from one of those guys.

I have a Karelian. We don't have bears down here in south ark yet, so i have no idea what he would do with a bear. He has bayed hogs and treed squirrels and coons. Great dog---really easy on the eyes. They are also known as Russo-European Laikas. He is for sale. Less than a year old.

I have a friend that hunts with the Redbones and wouldn't change it for the world. what I am hereing it appears to what part of the country you are from on what breed is best. I do know my friend up here has lost a few Redbones to old bear that wouldn't tree though.
