I had the same experience with one hog. I shot it right above the head into the neck, it was facing me, bullet (7X57) traveled almost the entire length of the hog. It went down, then got back up again and headed for the hills. It was eventually found some days later on another lease, meat ruined. Head on shots may not be the best way to take a hog.

What kind of bullet did you use?

Did you save the pelt? Looks really nice. I had one really nice sable black hog pelt. I guess the treatment wore off and the moths got to it after around five years.

I was shooting Remington core lokt 150 grains. I thought his head was low enough that I could get into the top of his neck, but the shot was about an inch high. Little lower and I think it would have been a good shot. But was just a little high. Thankful that we had the dog, cause she was right on him immediately so I didn't lose it.

It is a nice pelt, and I should have done something with it, but I didn't.

Head on shots are just fine if you know what you are doing. Right between the eyes if he is looking right at you, between the eyebrows if he has his head down. I've killed more hogs like this than almost any other way, wild and domestic. I like this shot and right in/behind the ear. Done day. No tracking, DRT.
