dorchester county md blackwater NWR

I am planning a sika hunt next october for my birthday. i am a maryland resident so all i have to do is get my regular license and bow stamp for thirty bucks and drive four hours down the mountain. i plan on hunting blackwater wildlife refuge. i know there are other lands accesible by boat but i don't want to haul a boat down there with my subaru.
does anyone here live around there?
would love to see anyones DIY archery maryland sika pics
am also considering assateague* island.
id like to hear experiences from both places.
im hoping blackwater is a better place to hunt because it is a closer drive.

Go to marylandwhitetails.com.

Plenty of info on Sikas.

A couple of friends and I lease number of properties just south of Blackwater. We limit out on sika and white tail every year. Get some real nice ones too.

I hunted Sika on Chinoteague NWR in VA. Basically that is the bottom part of Assateague Island. I hunted right up to the MD/VA line. Fun hunt. You will work for them but it is worth doing at least once.

Sika's are interesting to hunt. Basically they like it wet. If you aren't getting wet and muddy you're in the wrong place. They also don't like whitetails so if you're seeing whitetails then you're in the wrong place. I know in a lot of places they use tree stands overlooking swamps and sloughs. Where I hunted them there weren't any trees big enough to support a stand so I went into the muck. I used a 12 ga with buckshot since the shots were close and fast and rooted them out of the reed beds.

These things aren't very big. I didn't get any bulls (Sika are technically a small elk so the bull/cow thing is correct), all I got was females which was good since I was after meat. The average weight for a dressed out adult cow on Chincoteague was about 50 lbs so the ones I got were average.

Not that is matters much, but the proper name for female Sikas is hind in the west, same as Red deer, and the males are called Stags, same as red deer. I don't know what they call them in Japan.

These were both make sika or stags, although the smaller one (22#) was still developing horns
