Hog hunting Florida

I’m taking a trip to Florida Dec 2nd-Dec 8th to visit Mom&Dad who recently bought a house in The Villages. While I’m down visiting I was hoping to find someone to take me out hog hunting. I guess I could find some public land and go alone, but I don’t think that would be a good idea, not being familiar to the area, or to hog hunting. I don’t have the money to spend on an outfitter, so I was hoping to find someone on hunting net to show me the ropes of hog hunting. The Villages are located 55 miles NW of Orlando, near interstate 75, and the Florida turnpike. Bow hunting or gun would work for me, I would have to figure out how to get my bow down there, (we are flying from Chicago) my dad will have a .223 with him in Florida, if a .223 is too light and I need to borrow a rifle, Ill gladly pay for ammo and dinner. I hope this works. Thanks!!

OK no replies, plan B. How about suggestions on public land in that area?

Wish I could help you but we don't have hogs where I hunt in Fla.

Check out the local craigslist for near where your going to be. I always see ads for cheap hog hunts on there. Usualy between 150-300 bones.

check out myfwc.com for public hunting oppritunitys

Oh good lord, no one is going to help this guy out????

OK, just north of the Villages is Ocala Nat'l Forest... along the river, there are TONS of hogs..

Just to the west of you, are a couple of WMAs... lots of hogs there too.

Read the FWC regs, it can get confusing; but for the most part most of the area (pulbic land) is open and not quota or permit.

Or... you can cheat and go with a hunting outfit, of which there are tons.

Look up Woods n Waters magazine online, several reputable guys advertise there.

What are WMAs?

If you decide on a paid hunt we have them close to the Orlando area for $250 per day shoot all the hogs you can.

Ya your right, I’ll have to brush up on my abbreviations before heading out to public land to hunt.

WMA's are pretty much the only public land to hunt in FL if you don't even know what one is, it shows you haven't even looked at the MYFWC.com website. Check it out and you'll get most of your questions answered there.

honestly though florida public land hunting is probably the worst place to hunt public land in the united states.

I saw a hog hunt on craigslist the other day called "two guys and a hog" never hunted with them but they offer half day hunts for $30-$40 and hole days for $70. or they offer a guaranteed hunt for a little more...

Check them out allthough they are up in Perry.

.223 is a bit on the light side unless you limit yourself to head shots. With your zero experience hunting anything I recommend you look for a guided hunt. I don't know if Florida requires a license to hunt hogs but if they do, you will need to take and pass a hunter education class. It would be to your benefit to learn something abut hunting before you decide to do it.

No license needed for hogs in FL on private, but you will need a WMA permit if you hunt WMA's and check into the license thing on public. I'm not certain. Hogs migrate a lot so be ready to do a little legwork on public. Get a pair of snakeboots i'm still killing moccassins and pygmys in Dec.

When hunting on the wma's you need a license and the wma permit. It does not matter the species being hunted. I will be hunting wma for the first time this year. I did the guided hunt the first time and chose stalking so I could watch the guide read the terrain. FL is much different than Maine.
