What is the most exotic or rare thing you've ever ate?
Like, I've seen pig snouts and feet, hog jowls, chow chow, chopped liver and all sorts of other things in stores and wondered who eats that stuff!
|
Wife puts hog jowls in beans. Strangest thing we like, according to visitors, is fried turkey testicles, or "turkey fries" as they are known locally. Strangest thing I have seen in the store is blood and tongue loaf. Someone said it's a Northern food. I can't get past the blood part.

My Brother-in-law eats Blood Soup. It's made from duck Blood & is a Polish dish..All his family eats it..
I've eaten Steaks, meat from Exotic deer but nothing strange & don't plan on it... I've killed 2 Sheep & gave that meat away-just don't like it... |
I am married to a filipina woman need I say more? I have eaten many different animals from dog (while in Korea) to snake and pretty much everything in between. The worst thing I have eaten was Balut. It's a duck egg that that been incubated to within days of hatching then the egg is pickled. When you crack open the shell the duck is completely formed. The bones and beak crunch when you bite down. I was able to take one bite and keep it down. I couldn't finish the whole thing. My little neice loves them and could eat 3 or 4 of them at a time.
|
Shark, Aligator, Bison, rattlesnake, Catalina Ram. An old man I grew up with used to take all the critters I trapped and made BBQ out of them and offered them to me once and I had to pass. It had 'possum, skunk, muskrat, mink, coon, 'yote and fox in it.
He used to get the empty BBQ sauce jugs from my dads store and sell it for $5 a jug back in the 70's and 80's. I knew what was in it and wanted no part of it!!!!!!!! |
My dad and I used to eat all the muskrats we trapped. Fried 'rat, gravy, and butter beans is awfully hard to beat. That is unless you substitute rabbit for the muskrat...

Bu, the most dangerous would be anything my mother-in-law cooks. |
For the yanks among us, my most exotic would be 'roo.
That's kangaroo to you folks. It's quite good actually. I can't wait to have some more. Biker |

During my Peace Corps service in Zaire ('89-'91) and travels through W. Africa I got to sample a lot of critters.
Duiker, snakes, monkey (3x), grasshopers, fruit bats, some kind of woodpecker, palm weevil grubs (tasted like brown-n-serve sausages), camel, red river hog, civet, and elephant. The best two: 1. pangolin or scaly anteater (I found out there were endangered afterwards, but they were really really good) 2. cane rat or grass cutter (think woodchuck) The dog I ate was awful, even before I knew what it was. I also had some seal flipper pie in St. John's NFLD....definately not the best this I ever ate. There is a reason why livestock is limited to a relatively short list of species, all over the world...they taste the best. |
I've eaten rattlesnake before. Tastes a lot like chicken!
|
Pig feet, blood sausage, (pork sausage with a qt or so of blood in it), fried testicles of about anything are pretty good( mainly bull and turkey). I've got an iron stomach and am willing to try about anything at least once.
|
has to be octopus for me
|
Golden Eagle has to be the best thing I ever ate. The taste is a cross between a seagull and a whooping crane. :)
|
Aligator, ostrich.
|
Roasted Rattlesnake: First kill a snake.
You can cut it up anyway you want. Add butter, garlic, jalepenos and plenty of Tony's. Cook on the grill for about an hour. YUM. |
It's best if I don't tell all the wierd stuff I've eaten, I don't want to make ya'll sick.
|
I forgot to add snake, which I don't consider all that exotic, dog, and cat.
Seeing the pics of that rattler is making me hungry. Biker |
Highlonesome...you rock! The post asks for a list, and you post pix of a rattler & recipe. Well done sir, well done.

If you asked people in some parts of the world what the most disgusting thing we (westerners) eat, it would be cheese -- pour milk from an animal in a container, add bacteria, let it set until it gets hard . . . even better let it age.
Personally, I've eaten snake, turtle, frog, octopus, abalone, just about anything else from the sea, racoon, beaver (both kinds), snails, blood sausage, tripe, and my Grandma used to make some kind of kidney stew (don't remember where the kidneys came from). It just barely occured to me to mention crawfish and bullhead and squid. |

Whitefish livers, breaded and deep fried. Tastes exactly as you would expect - fishy tasting liver! I saw the cable show "Bizarre Foods" where he claimed they were good. BS!
Oh, and I ate a live alewife once on a dare. Didn't really taste like anything as I did not chew it. |
coyote - we made tacos out of it.

Thats about as rare as it got for me, put hog jowls in beans on occasion. Do love lamb, gator, and buffalo. Rare for these parts lol atleast. |

I've got a great recipe for sturgeon head soup. I've made it several times. My wife loves it. Limiting factor would be, of course, lack of sturgeon heads.
