Hogs with a pellet rifle?
I just watched this show on versus where the host was hunting hogs using hounds and a .177 gamo air rifle. Sounds a little under gun to me but at 10-15 yards they did the trick. I'm not a hog hunter but I was wondering if anyone in here has tried something like this.

I think I saw that same video, but they are using high powered air guns. I did a search because I don't do the gun thing at all, and was surprised that you can spend up to $5,000.00 on an air gun. They even have 50 calibers.

ya but those pellet guns shoot a 300+ gr pellet at 700+ fps.
I just dont see a .177 having enough mass to penetrate the skull.
I saw a small hog get hit in the head with a .17 hmr, dropped on the spot only to get up never to be found, dont know the exact bullet placement though, as we didnt find him.

I worked with a guy who does the park pig depredation in this area and he trapped most of the hogs. We killed several with a .38 and a .45 cal pellet gun. They were Korean made and loaded with a scuba tank (something like 3200psi). Killed them quick but the guns were about the size of a Kreighoff trap shotgun and were about as loud. The velocity drops off dramatically with even short distances. With a special permit from fish & game we also killed many with a .22 LR but all of this was at a very close range and it was killing, not hunting. Also a lot of work.

Its possible to kill a hog with a pellet rifle they have 3 soft spots on the skull. I used a 177 to kill coons and coyotes for a long time they have the exact same softspots. But you are correct there isn't alot of room for error. You are trying to hit a spot about the size of a quarter, on a coon its about a dime. If given the opportunity I'd hunt a hog with a pellet rifle. But I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
