.243 or .30-30?
 

The range I shoot varies. Here in CA there aren't huge hogs where I hunt. Everything ever taken that i know about has been between 90-150 pounds. what caliber gun should i get between the .243 and the .30-30?

In my opinion anything from a .223 on up is perfect for hogs.

Either one WILL work for hogs.




I like the .243 for it's versatility.

i shot a hog with the 30-30 last deer season.worked well about 100 pounds. went 5 yards and plop, dead,ching,bacons done.

I like the 30-30, but either will work just fine. Whichever one you like better.

30-30 is a good brush gun but u can't stretch it too far 243 is a purty good all purpose I have a NEF single shot 243 I keep n the truck n do everything from hunting yotes to deer to hogs n works purty good out to 300 yds

Both will work. And although most consider the 30-30 a short-range "brush" gun, I've not had any walk away on distant shots.

.243 will work, too. Just stick to more solidly constructed game bullets, not thin-jacketed varmint and coyote ones.

I had a .223, I just handload it with Sierra Gamekings. Also had a .25-06, .308, 30-30, and several other guns I've also killed hogs with.

Then I hit a bump in the truck and lost all of them.:s1:

I would get the 30-30 but either will work great.

shot 2 so far with my 243, got it last Oct., the one dropped, the other dropped , got up, ran 10 feet and dropped again.the one weighed 102 lbs., the other 104 lbs.
shot placement is the key =)

First---there is no such thing as a brush gun! Any bullet hitting a limb or twig is going to be deflected---no matter what caliber your shooting. No bullet shoots through the brush.
As far as what caliber, .243 or 30-30, either one will do fine killing pigs. The .243 will shoot better at longer ranges---250-300 yards.

I shot through a feeder leg once and the bullet hit my intended target in the spot I was aiming at. ;)

A brush gun means the length of the barrel.......It does not mean shooting through brush....:s13: and yes I agree with you, no matter what caliber, it will deflect!

any centerfire will do, a c-spine shot & you'll have poke chops all daylong

We use .223 AR's work perfect for any size hog.

Well yeah, but you're using a cannon !! :happy0157: There haven't been any questions about your having enough gun to shoot hogs. :D



:sign0018:I just bought a new rifle, :barmy: a Browning A-Bolt II in .308, and I can't wait to get out and start using it to terrorize the hogs. I'll keep my old Enfield as a spare and loaner.


Back to the original topic, I haven't shot a 30-30 nor a .243, but like some other posters, I consider the .243 a bit better for longer range shots. At the ranges you've mentioned, it may not matter which weapon you choose. For me, the purchase of a rifle is as much emotional as practical. If I'm comfortable with it, and I have confidence in it, then it's a good weapon for me.

Love both calibers, I think you would be good to go with either.
