Wild hogs...anybody seeing many?????
I live in north central LA and over the past several years the hogs have just about taken over. There are hogs now in places where there never has been before and they are tearing everything up!! Just wondering what other states are looking like? Ya'll seeing many???
|
We don't have wild hogs around here. I understand that they can do a massive amount of damage to the areas they live in. The IA DNR has said that there are small groups of them now in the very southernmost areas of the state, but none this far north (yet). While I certainly feel for the farmers that have to cope with the damage hogs cause, I actually envy you for having such a "problem." If I lived in a hog infested area, I'd be out just about every weekend trying to whack a couple to fill the freezer. Most states don't require any tags or licenses to shoot them, so the cost to put one in the freezer is just gas and ammo (and I can make plenty of ammo!). Iowa DNR has put out a "shoot on sight" request for feral hogs. If you see one, they want you to shoot it right now, with the only additional request being that they want you to call them and report where, when and how many hogs you saw/shot so they can get a handle on the scope of the infestation.

Hogs
Same thing has already happened here in GA. I live in Central GA, near the Ocmulgee river, use to be you only found hogs near the rivers, now they are every where. They are destroying farm crops etc. all across the county I live in, and the state.
We used to have several feeders on our hunting club near the river, hogs just about took it over. When we took down the feeders puting out corn, (which was put up to help attract more deer to our property and know one was allowed to hunt near the feeders), we was able to thin out the hogs and get them under control. Something to think about! dog1 |
yea, we bait'em up around here and try to get as many as we can and alot of guys have dogs and hunt them for fun. You can't kill'em all once they get established.
|
We are over run with them here in east central fla
|
5 years ago there weren't any hogs on our hill farm. Three years ago we started seeing hog sign, I shot two young boars that sept. Now there is sign everywhere we go. They are rooting up the whole farm now. Talked with a game warden for our area last year, he said that several years ago about 20 got loose a few miles to our north and the population has just exploded from there. I sure wish we could get rid of them, but it dont look like thats gonna happen.
|
We're infested with them down here too. I thoroughly enjoy hunting hogs.
|
My nephew traps hogs for Citrus County in West Fl. and he says they are over run there too.Dave

I'm in West Central, Fl and we also are over crowded with them........
|
We've got them everywhere in eastern SC

In Texas there are two kind of lands.. Those with hogs, and those that are about to have hogs. They are populating faster than we can kill them.
One of the problems we have in Texas is that ranchers with hogs want to jump on the charge to hunt band wagon. Being greedy will come back and bite them in the butt. |
The DNR should pay us to kill them. That would get people out there hunting them that normally aren't. In the long run, the amount of money they pay out for hogs wouldn't even come close to the amount of money farmers lose every year in crop loss.
|
same thing here in arkansas
never had them before in one of my deer leases, all pine thickets and last year about 40 were seen, first time ever there. but see lots of the in the bottomlands. but, i am doing my part in thinning the population. |
i live in tampa so if anyone needs help with controlling their hog population i would be more than happy to help out,
:fighting0007: LOL!!! a friend's parents own some property in central Geoargia and i've been deer hunting up there for 7 years and i haven't seen any hogs on their property. but, a couple years before i started going up there they had a problem with hogs so his dad built a hog trap. it's basically a 10'X10' pen with a guillotine type door that was attached to a stick via a rope that was wedged in the ground on the opposite side of the cage, that was surrounded by bait. when several hogs got in the pen and started to feed on the bait they would eventually knock the stick loose and the door would fall and trap the hogs in the pen. it seemed to be effective because like i said earlier there hasn't been any hog sightings on his property in years. |

That is very effective.... but I guarantee you there are still hogs roaming around. There's no way he's going to trap them all.
EDIT: SWThomas, i didn't mean that the trap would eliminate all the hogs in every scenario. it could help in some situations though. the situation that i'm talking about wasn't no where near as bad as some people here have described. my friends dad eliminated the problem as soon as he could because he didn't want the hogs on his property. his property is made up of pastures, planted pines and hardwoods. the creeks and ponds on the property have been pretty much dried up for a while. there are no major food sources for them to over take, and there are no swamps around. so, these may be some of the factors as to why we haven't seen any hogs or sign. it certainly sounds like others have major problems that i could help with. |

My nephew has a helicopter service and hog erradication is one of the things he does with them. He kills them by the thousands. I talked with him a couple of days ago and said he took out 2900 in 4 weeks working around the rice fields in the Texas coastal bend area. His personal best was 224 pigs in about 4 hrs of flying and that was only about 15 miles from my place. Yeah, feral pigs are a big problem in Texas funny thing is people are will to pay to hunt them and then serious farmers and ranchers are willing to pay good money to help rid their property of them. The places that charge to hunt them will never ever keep them in check and are out to make a dollar, a very effective way to help control hogs is through superior firepower through the air.:groupwave: |
i live close to Meridian, MS I've been seeing a a couple hogs here and there. It doesn't seem to anywhere near the deer population in my area. You can find some pig tracks along creek beds mixed in with natural wildlife. but I fear populations are about to get worse. I have spotted twice what looks like a domestic hog that has escaped. It's large, has short hair, and no tusks.

There are wild hogs all over SW Oklahoma. If one wants to get a hog in this hot weather just watch the ponds and the wallows. It takes some patience but the hogs will be there sooner or later.
|
Just about every afternoon. I saw one on the ride to work this morning.

That would be great, but ill be in Brock that weekend. I have been seeing the hogs around here. I have not been out to my land, other than to bitch at the fence builders. But if things go as normal, they will be all over there too. The weekend of Oct. 17 is also a bad one for me. Other than that, lets get you two down to stick a deer or hog, or both.

I wanna kill a hog or two!! Don't have them here and it sounds like a lot of fun. A REAL cheap pig hunt might be worth the trip to hog country.

they are fun to hunt. not as stupid as people think. my place has a bunch , over run with them. only 12 miles from down town tampa. granted this is where I guide hunts at, but i can tell you we have never brought any in and released them. once they are established somewhere hard to get rid of them.
