First hog hunt, a couple questions.

I'm going on my first hog hunt and I'm taking a couple of my Model 94 lever guns. I'm taking my30-30 and444 and maybe a 44 mag, I don't know yet. What do y'all think about using the LeverEvolution versus a good ole Winchester Powerpoint or Core Loc bullet?

Or something else in these guns?

With those cartridges do I shoot in the shoulder or the ear?

Thanks!

MY GOD!!! Dont you know that hogs can only be stopped with anti tank rounds? Seriously the last hog I shot I took with a subsonic 22 lr round. Right between the eye and ear. I am a BIG fan of the new Hornady round for the 30-30. It really reduced thew size of my buddys groups and just flat knock the pigs out. It still is not a 200 yard round but it helps a bunch.

Any of the calibers you mention will knock them flat. Dont shoot the shoulder though, aim a little bit lower and aim for the elbow, or right between the eye and ear. If he is facing you remember to aim ABOVE the eyes because their brain sits a bit high on their pointy skulls.

200 pounds are for pics and 80 pounds are for eating.

Snook, I do agree, I've heard that people tend to go overboard when killing hogs and I'm not thinking about carrying a .338 or something like that. Thanks for your info.

Reb, thanks for the picture, I'll aim forone of the 4 dots on your chart!

I agree many peple use more gun than they need. Although, I enjoy shooting them with my 45/70 Marlin 1895, or my Marlin 444. The 45/70 works very well with a 300 grain Barnes Original over a stout dose of Reloader 7. The 444 works well with the Hornady 265 grain flat point. For me both have been 100% bang flops, so far. That has been on 40 to 200+ pound hogs.Pistols and bows are fun too, but above all I want meat.

Its all about placement not about size.:D I've seen a sow take 4 hits from a 44 automag at 20 yards and walk off, I put one (180g bronze tip 3006 ) behind the right shoulder and it did not make it out the other side. Found it stuck in that armer they have. Then I saw one dropped for the count with a 3030 with a shot to the neck.
Placement, placement, placement!
