pepering hogs
 

hello all, new to the site. i am having a discussion on another forum and would like the opinions of those here if your willing ..

my question : is it acceptable to "pepper hogs with a 12 ga." .those who live with the damage hogs do say it is, as a deterrent from returning to the area.. those that don't say: shoot to kill or not at all . whats your position on this one?? thank you in advance for responses .

Here's my opinion. If I were a farmer and the hogs were damaging my crops, causing me to lose money, I'd certainly pepper them, with the intent of runningoff as many as possible,buttrying to kill them of course. If I'm a hunter, then I'm trying to kill them first and foremost. Not wound them. It's ind of a sticky situation.

If I'm trying to run them off I'd certainly pepper them. I'd do it to a dog, why not a hog?

Ironically my dad and I had a talk about this Saturday afternoon, we are both members of the same forum that you mentioned. I constantly use a shotgun to kill hogs, the difference between me and this other kid Texan is that I don't use bird shot in my shotgun I use 00-8pellet or 00-12 pellet (12 or 10, I don't have a box handy) in my 12 Gauge. I also use my .357 when the chance presents itself. However, I always shoot to kill, or at the least put it in it's tracks and come back with my pistol to finish it off. I disagree with what the kid did, but at the same time, I have seen first hand what a freshly plowed wheat field looks like after a group of hogs have gone through it, total destruction. So I would say that he should have concentrated his fire on one pig, it is possible to put 5 shots into it before it gets away. They rarely return to the smell of blood or sound of gunshots for a few days, leaving you plenty of time to go and get better fire power before the next round.

About a year ago The Rev mentioned something about peppering one and some folks didn't like it! The hog was about 50 yards across a river facing away from him and he did it with dove load in open bore gun.Like the old boar(the hog not the rev:D) would notice much damage from something like that!I would rather kill them too but if they are a pain in arse then pepper them at distance and educate them and get them out of way!
