Fallow deer question.

If any one has any experience hunting Fallow deer, maybe you can enlighten me. Im supposed to be going on a fallow hunt at the end of the month, and was curious if any one knows a quick reference way to determine a nice buck. Im not familiar enough with them to take a look and say "thats a nice one." Is there any way to tell visually, that could help me out so I dont shoot one and find out later it wasnt a shooter? I cant seem to find any info regarding this on the web.

RE: Fallow deer question.

I have bowhunted them a few times & took two. I am not really a trophy hunter so one was just nice with little palmation-the other was VERY nice but not so much palmation-just sevral points & close to 200#s in weight. Excellent eating-nothing like Whitetail.
You can probably look up Exotic Animal records-SCI & should bne able to get some idea from that. I would say it's like Whitetail-when you see a good one-you will atomatically know. Enjoy your hunt.

RE: Fallow deer question.

Hi Scooter,

Deer hunting has really increased in popularity in Australia over the last 10+ years. There are seven species of Deer in Australia and I can assure you the venison from Fallow is up there with the best. I hunt Fallow each year, primarily for meat, but occasionally I harvest a buck. Typical Fallow bucks are around the 180-190lb mark with the big fellows getting up to 220lb.

You don’t need too much gun for Fallow. My preferred combination for Fallow is the 7mm-08 loaded with 120gr Nosler BTs, but I’ve taken Fallow out to 328yds with a 243 loaded with 85gr projectiles.

A typical example of a Fallow

Good sized Fallow

Mediocre Buck, but was taken as an eater pre rut

A superb trophy Buck

Thats a good one! I know you don't want to be half asleep and one ease in on you and ROAR! That will wake up up and scare the devil out of you.

Yeah it was on a ranch. Its too bad these arent in the wild around here, they are a pretty cool critter. There were bigger ones, but this one offered a good shot so I took it, and Im more than pleased. I really wasnt expecting any thing this nice. They were tough to get, and deffinately made us work for it.

Beautiful bigfallow deer.....if anyone would consider these animalson a ranch are actively hunted for over 200 days a year, you undertand that it is not an easy hunt.Pressured animals act different.
