.270 VS. 7mm. Rem. Mag...would I tell a difference on hogs?
 

I've narrowed my upcoming gun purchase down to 2 models.....and I THINK I've narrowed down my caliber choices to 2 also.
I'm looking at the .270 Win. or the 7mm. Rem. Mag.
I'll be hunting deer and hogs in East Texas. Shots wouldn't be excessivly long. Anywhere up to 200-250 yards, but most would be 100 yards or under.
I'm looking at "worst case scenarios" here....
If I was only hunting deer, my choice would be the .270, but I have a lot of hogs (some pretty large) in the area that I hunt almost year round.
So here's my question. Let's say I have a 250lb. boar standing at 150 yards. I have to make a fairly quick shot, and therefore don't have the time to wait for a head shot.....which leaves me needing to drive that bullet through the heart/lungs/grissle plate/scapulas of that hog.

If I have a .270 with a 130gr. Nosler Partition or Barnes X, am I going to see any difference than if I had a 7mm. Rem. Mag. with a 150gr. Partition or Barnes X.

The "logical" side of me says to just get a .30-06 and shoot a well made 165gr. bullet and be done with it.......but I obviously don't always listen to my logical side.

I'm hoping that some of you folks who have use both calibers on deer (as well as larger hogs) could give me some informed opinions about the "terminal" performance on that big hog......or if I should go seriously consider going with the 06'

I shoot a 7mm Rem Mag. but can almost guarantee you that you will not notice the difference on these animals or deer either. The 7 will have a bit more recoil, but you will not notice it anyway when shooting at game. Just stick with well constructed bullets for either of them.

I have blasted hogs with just about every caliber from .22 mag to 30-06. I think the hog is WAY over rated when it comes to trying to kill it. They go down very easy with a good shot to the chest. Slugs, 22-250, 6mm, 25-06, 30-30, 30-06 killed them all with only one in myrecollection running more than 2 feet. I think the 2 feet they went was from their legs folding and them falling to the front. You do not even need a huge caliber to penetrate their shield of the males. My buddys go to hog gun is his 22-250. It absolutely liquifies the internals on big boar hogs and he is shooting a little bitty 55 grain bullet. My go to gun is my 30-06 and more often than not I am shooting completely through the hog including the last 180 pound boar. Shoot what ya like and go get some bacon.

The only difference you would notice is in recoil, either choice is PLENTY big for hogs of any size, I would make your caliber choice more on what other animals you might be hunting for example if you plan on hunting elk I would definetely go with the 7mm. Just think about how else you might use the gun and make your choice from there. My last hog was shot deader than hell never even took a step but just fell over using a 25-06 with a barnes triple shok at about 120 yards.

You don't need a cannon to kill a hog. Shoot what is comfortable to you.. That's why I prefer a bow.

Notice.......The Rev said a bow! that's not 100-150-200-250 or 300 yds, that's 30 to 40 yd's...;).:D:D:D

If you are going to shoot them under 400yds, a .270 150gr NP is enough....If you are going to shoot them under 250yds, a .30-30 is enough...

I shot a .270 at deer for years, but the good old .30-06 is an all around favorite......

If you were shooting at 400+ yards you may notice a difference, but other than that, I would say probably not.

400 yards, that aint hunting!!!!!!!!!!!:D:D:DThat's killing!! I like to see the life leave their eyes.Up close and personal.. I'd use a base ball bat if I had enough _ alls...:D:D

I've seen badly shot hogs run off and not be recovered after being shot with 7mm Mag. and .300 Win Mag. Have also seenhogs shot deadwith one shot from a .22LR. Shot placement is the key. No caliber or bullet will turn a gut shot into a bang flop 100% of the time.
