20 guage buckshot Vs. 100 pound hog

I have a brother who is 8 years old and he can't aim very fast and hogs don't like to sit still so My dad and I thought he maybe could use a 20 guage with buckshot. What are your thoughts?
Just a Note: these hogs will all be 150 lbs. or less

Think that the largestbuckshotloaded for 20 gauge is #2 made by Federal. It might work at very close range. Buckshot is not an option here in OK, it is outlawed forhunting.

If you do a search on here, you will find that there is a general consensus that buckshot will not kill hogs or deer from a 12 ga, so I would say a 20 ga is completely out of the question. BUT, I do not subscribe to that line of thought. I have killed deer and hogs out to 40 yards with 00 buck, and it has dropped every animal that I shot dead in its tracks.

My advise is to buy the largest shot that you can and pattern the gun, and I would also limit the kids shots to 30 yards. I have never used a 20 ga with buckshot, but it should do just fine.

Yes they do. I use plain old fashioned Fosters in mine with a modified choke, at 70 yards they go nearly through a deer. I'd shorten the distance to 50 yards for hogs unless you used sabotted slugs.

yes they do make many different types of slugs for 20 gauges, in fact some people are shifting away from using 12 gauge slugs and using 20s because they don't beat you up with recoil as bad and still hit deer like a truck. I would imagine they would do just fine on a 150 lb hog as well. Depending on whether you have a rifled barrel or a smooth will change the ammo you use and the effective range. For a young guy I would stick to just the basic foster style slugs and keep your shots fairly short and it will do just fine.

if you are gonna have to get a gun for him, I would go with the 16 ga.it doesn't kick as bad as most 20 ga. do and it has more knock down.

As for buckshot for hogs and deer , my wife and I hunted with nothing except shotguns with buckshot for about 20 years.many , many , many deer and hogs have fallen to the two of us. she shot a Rem. 100 in 16ga. with #1 buck.I shoot a 12 ga. with nothing except #4 buck.they work very well for us.my Mom and Dad also hunted with us and they use 12 ga. with #1 buck.
We all have taken over the years 100's of hogs up to and over 350 lbs.all with buckshot.not to mention the deer that we took.

that being said; ya may check and see if someone has a 16ga. and 20ga. you could try before you spend the $$$.

all this is just MHO. there may be some that disagrees with me on this ; but they are wrong. LOL just joking.

20 ga. with buckshot will take most hogs to 30 yards.

A great trick is to use a waterfowl choke tube and make head shots. Works like a charm. They make take one step. LOL!! I personally use 3 inch slugs, but for shot the waterfowl tube works well.
