Weapons for hogs

Yep your .357 will do it. I use Federal Hardcast 180 grn. and they work fine. We had a NRAstaff memberdown to hunt with us and he used the Federals in .44 Mag and wrote an article praising them.

RE: Weapons for hogs
I shot a charging 200 pound boar in the forehead 3 times with a Ruger Blackhawk 357 and had to climb a tree to get away from him. My Dad had already shot him once in the shoulder with a 243. With my fourth shot, I hit him just below his ear, and he collapsed.
This was a few years back, and I can't remember what load I was using in my 357. My Dad was using 95 gr Win Supreme BTs. I still carry my Blackhawk 357 for backup when checking my hog trap, but I always have either a Marlin 30-30 or Blaser 308 for the real work.

I saw 2 amazing things in Mississippi this year.A 250# boar with 4 loads of buckshot in the head took a shot in the neck from a 30 30 before he dropped. Then a 300 pounder stopped a 300 mag with his shoulder. The bullet didnt get 3 inches. He dropped when the next one found his ear.But im thinking that shoulder plate is made of iron!Id like to take one with a bow, mabe a quatrering away shot will alow an arrow into the chest cavity.

I don't think I would try a ballistic tip from a 243behind the shoulder of a hog. Those bullets are made for varmits and thin skinned game like deer. They would come apart on a hogs should or the thick plate behind the shoulder. A better bullet might have put him down.

RE: Weapons for hogs
We had another hog killed this weekend that was walking around with a broadhead in him. That is two now in three weeks. It was a 255lb. boar with a thick shield. The broadhead was a three-blade that was between the shoulder and the ribs. It appeared to have been a quartering away shot and the shield deflected the arrow enough to not penetrate into the vitals but to slip under the leg! The shaft had come unscrewed and was gone. The hog was in good shape except for the damage the broadhead was doing under the leg. Also we found a pure European that was shot in the shoulder last Wednesday with a 300 Win. Mag. The bullet didn't exit and the shield closed up the entrance wound after 200 yds. He made it another 100 yds. beforegoing down.Incredibly tough critters!
