For hogs with a shotgun I would use a slug.

While I am not 100% sure about the effectiveness of 00 buckshot on a bigger hog, you are hunting on somebody elses land so shoot what they say.

It is really not that much different than ranchers requiring fixed blade broadheads and no mechanicals. Normally there is a reason.

Do yourself a favor and take a bow along with a pistol backup. I think I saw where you are a bow hunter. On the ones I went on, on a ranch, the guys who had guns pretty well walked in, and bam thier hunt was over within an hour and they looked disappointed. As mine and my brothers stretched out for over 5 hours. And if the bow doesn't work out, you always got the pistol

But as far as 00's not killing a hog, I think he is little off his rocker. If you keep your distances under 25 yards, your going to have a dead hog. But there's alot of tasty meat you might destroy. I wouldn't do it myself. You would want to wait until they are quartering away from you.

You may not be able to get close enough for the buck shot to do it's job proberly. If you take a shotgun, use a slug. Also, keep in mind that if there are dogs involved, buck shot is likely to hit one of them also.
Me personally, I probably wouldn't want a hunter I was guiding using buck shot either, but we use dogs.

I too use a slug. Usually 3" mags with 1.25 oz slugs.

I have never had a problem dropping a pig with a load of Buckshot but I never shoot over dogs and the country I hunt in is quite thick. I would use slugs on large boars in more open country and I just bought 100 Lee key slugs to re-load for that exact purpose.

I have never hunted hogs before, but i know that they have thick skin. With buckshot you get very little penetration, even at closer ranges. You might be able to do it, but why take the chance.

A shot at 50yds with Improved Modified and 00 at the head, is a no Brainer! Atleast according to the Hog!:D
