Catahoula, Rhodesian Ridge Back and Pit Bull crossed.

1. Catahoula= Natural Hunter
2. Rhodesian Ridge Back= Courage (used in lion hunting)
3. Pitt Bull= Shorter legs and a Jaw that slip locks

Catahoula Leopard Dog

Trouble with grey hound/pit crosses is that they try to be tough like a bulldog but don't have the equipment to get it done. They tend to get cut up pretty bad. I run catahoulas and catch with bulldogs.

i think you first have to decide what you want your dog to do.
do you want him to find the hog? = strike dog
do you want him to bay the hog? = bay dog
do ou want him to catch the hog? = catch dog

next decision is how many dogs are you going to hunt with?
that will tell you what type of dog to get.

strike dog is any dog with long legs that can cover vast amounts of ground in a hurry and a good nose to find them. the catahoula, plotthound, blackmouth curr are good choices.

bay dog a dog that will hold the hog in one spot by keeping the from turning or running again the catahoula blackmouth curr and plotthounds are good at this.

catch dog any dog that can lock his jaws and is stupid enough to fight something that can outweigh him by 200%. pitbull bulldog most commonly used .
we use a mixture of these breeds:
1-catahoula
2-catahoula/bulldog/rotweiler/rodesian ridgeback
3-pitbull/beagle
4-blood hound/plotthound/curr
5-american bulldog
6-catahoula/curr
we currently have pups from number two and number list listed dogs. they are 10 weeks old and catching everything insight so far.
next year we are planning on breeding the number two to the number one and the number five to a freinds dog that is a catahoula/bulldog.

pick your dog that most matches the type of performance that you want from your hunt, that is the most important thing to remember.
there are many breeds to choose from study them and mix them, seems to be our best success.

I have some pit/greyhound mixes for the coyotes. They greyhound gives them the speed to catch them and the pit gives them the aggression and strength to take care of them when they catch them. I dont like to use them on hogs because of how tall they are. Even with a vest I feel they could get hooked too easy.
