Keeping Hogs Out

I live in Texas and I am considering running feeders year round this year for the first time. Up front, yes it is legal and I'm not here to argue ethics, morals, and so on.

Hogs have hit us hard this year and we are going to build a "pen" to keep them out. I have heard lots of ideas on this, but our pen is going to be barbed wire (probably 3 strands) and probably 3 foot high.

My question: Almost all hogs in our area cross under fences (duh, I know), but how low should my bottom strand be to prevent this. By the way, we are not talking small southern javelinas. We are talking HOGS and their piglets. Any opinions, experiences, or so on??? Thank you in advance for your input.

barb wire is totaly out of the ? hahah you should get some red top fence or better yet Hog panel and do it up my dad has 5 strand of barbed wire and they still go threw it, corse he really doesnt mind much NEmore =). I have seen them force there way threw the red top fence after a while but it will work. I also feed year round the problem is if its not hog/cattle panel (piglets will still go threw the cattle panel) they will force threw cause htey smell the food =). Hogs are very smart animals.

I've heard of using hog panels.....Are they expensive and do they
come in different heights, lengths, etc.??

The Rev 02-14-2006 03:09 PM

RE: Keeping Hogs Out

Tractor Supply Co. has hog panels 34" x 16' long for 16.94
52 x 16' long for 21.99
Your looking at abouttwo bucks a footto do that way... and that the cheapest way I know. When you figure post and concrete to set them in.

ORcall us to have hog hunting party at your place.. :D:D... I am sure most of us Texas boys would be happy to help you out. :D

RE: Keeping Hogs Out

OK, so how big should this "pen" be? If I made it four sided and
used one 16' panel per side, would that be enough??

I would love to host a pig hunting party. I have no use for those
critters. The bad thing is that they just show up at all different times and
have yet to show up in the daylight. I have cameras up and they like to
come in between 11 p.m. and 3 a.m. Worse than that, they don't come in
every day.

The real bad news is that there were already four of five huge sows this
year and a ton of piglets. Can't wait til next season[:@]

The hogs will go right through barb wire and not even slow down. Hog panels are the only way to slow them down though they will get get through eventually.

RE: Keeping Hogs Out

yea The Rev pretty much coverd the panel hog panel here goes 13.99 for 34"x16' but it will keep them out, maybe run a strand of barbwire across the bottom. still this will only keep them out for a while, eventually they will burrow or push enough to get in. I have had my feeder boxed in 1panel on each side with 2 T post in the middle for about 3 years and they havnt got in yet, YET being the key word =) they are tearing it up pretty good around there tho.

Yep 3 strands of barb wont even slow em down I have seen them run through 5 wires 6” apart running 18,000 volts. If there a pest have you considered making a pig trap then you can just show up the next morning and put a bullet in them, that or you could tie them up and take them to a chiller for some cash.

Just tell Rev,me and Kyle where your place is and we will come out no matter what time of the day or night to take care of the problem.

You really do need the 3 Burleson boys for a tough job like this:);):D

I would msay trap as many as you can and move them.you will never get them all but most of them. then you can put the panels or red top hog wire around the feeders and keep them out.you may run an electric fence around the outside at the bottom.then you are sure to keep them off you feed.(MOST OF THE TIME)

I used to have this problem alot with rats, and weasels eating my chickens and pheasant and quail i would sell.I prevented this by digging 2-3 feet down and palcing boards there. So when they dig they would hit the board and eventualy give up.

Sorry for my ignorance, but what is this Red Top wire everyone
keeps talking about??

Burleson, huh?? I actually live in Weatherford and I have friends in
Burleson. I hunt out west in Gorman....Near Ranger.

I talked with the guys I share my lease with today and after looking at
what it is going to cost to fence off my feeders, we are considering
hog hunting parties ourselves. We are talking about trapping, but
it is a good hour and a half drive. Can't check those traps too often.

Thank ya'll once again for your input and opinions. Just keep the info
coming!

Never heard of anything that stands up over time, exept electrical fences. with three lines at8 inches 16 inches and24 inches. :DMind you, I know a case, where they wired the pigs inside their field, and didnt realise this until it became all to appearant!:D

Bait where you want them, and dont shoot there when you dont want them elsewhere.Hunt agricultural sites hard. (ye old carrot and whip principle)
If you are both a hunter and a farmer, remember that if you shoot the matriark the rest of the group will be in anarchy and wreck the area since they dont know whereelse to move.
To much food supplywill make them breed uncontrollably and out of breeding cycles, underaged and such. At least thats the word I hear around here.

Good luck!

Tplay, you may have to put some hunting parties together to help control the population. I know you probably don't like people running all over your lease, but getting some guys you know shouldn't be hard. unless you have put lights for hunting them at night it's hard to charge for this, but hunt them hard for months, will certainly help you, and may just keep them from coming in so often, or may drive them away completely. Remember pigs are not stuipd animals.. just ugly..
(P.S. I like your signature).. My office is in Poolville, and have one superindent living in Weatherford.. and know quite a few people there.. let me know if I can help you out with anything.

it's just the name of a really good brand hog wire.most is 52" high and will withstand most hogs.a roll is usuall 330' long so a roll should fence two feeders if done right.put a slight angle to the wire, about 6" to 8" out at the top with one strain of barbed wire on top. that way they can't climb it.just peg it at the botton and should be OK.

:D:DIf they want in they are going to get in. You can only slow them down. I have seen some of the best pens made keep them out for a time but they will just dig under them after some time.
If you want to stop them from busting up your feeders you are going to need to hang them from trees, then you can put up a pen under them. Will help with cows but the pigs will get in.
Where are you from? I live in Lubbock.

RE: Keeping Hogs Out

I live in Weatherford, Texas, but I hunt in Gordon area which is near Ranger.

I really appreciate all the input I have received on this topic. It has made
a big difference on our approach to this issue. The one thing we have
in our favor is that the hogs seem to all maintain "primary residence" on
our neighbors land. They seem to visit us about once a week right now
(based on pictures from cameras), so our feeders must not be the
primary food source.

Our goal (besides killing them all) is to make it difficult enough that they
would rather "shop" elsewhere!:D

RE: Keeping Hogs Out

We've had a pretty serious hog overpopulation problem on our lease for a while. Since deer season ended my brother in law and I have hunted them really hard and it seems to have made a difference. I have been out at least 3 times a week and for the past 2 weeks haven't seen one hog. I know that we have not put much of a dent in their numbers but I think the pressure has moved them out for now. They WILL be back. When they come back I'll be waiting for them. We don't trap because of the cattle on the property. Caught a calf last year and momma sure tried hard to get us when we tried to let it loose. That was some fun!
I have seen some fresh rooting and tracks so they aren't all off the place but we aren't seeing 20 or 30 hogs in a pasture at one time. That just makes picking out a target harder. So many choices!
Hunt 'em hard, they will move off.

Get six panels and build a pen. That should be enough....

Tplay, where in Texas do you live and would you like anyone to come down to your place and help thin out the hogs that live in your area? I have two sons that would love to help and they are at that just right to learn safe hunting. Thanks Jovan

RE: Keeping Hogs Out

We use hog panels and T-posts to build our pens and it keeps most of them out. With the exception of the real big hogs. Blackwell Welding in New Bransfels builds some good pre-fab panel pens. They also work well.

Yep, so true. Hogs will take off when hunted hard.. and Your right Txrookie, they will come back again. Hogs do migrate. So one way to control them, is to let them know you are there!!
